Messier 51 (M51) is perhaps better known by its nickname, the Whirlpool Galaxy, because its face-on orientation to us highlights its winding spiral arms. This gives our telescopes a different perspective on a spiral galaxy similar to our Milky Way, whose structure we cannot observe directly since we’re inside it. The sonification tracks along a line emanating from the galaxy's core to the edge of the image and scanning clockwise. The light encountered by this line has been mapped to the notes of a melodic minor scale. The sequence represents infrared data from NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope. 

At this wavelength, the spiral arms are prominent, so the pitch creeps upward as the spiral extends farther from the core. The bright core, which harbors a supermassive black hole, produces a constant low hum punctuated by short sounds from compact bright sources within the galaxy.

Perreando En La Miseria (prod. eme vs Erick:de:Miseria)

Paisajes sonoros, cartografías del habla, instantáneas auditivas, object trouvé, apropiacionismo, folclore fonético, remix... todas estas definiciones de arte convergen en esta pieza denominada Democracia Sonora, una serie de grabaciones de campo, realizadas a espacios urbanos de la ciudad de Guatemala. Este material fue captado inicialmente por Roberto Pérez Samayoa y posteriormente re-utilizado como elemento musical por 10 productores de la escena de música electrónica guatemalteca. El resultado es un álbum con 11 cortes que trasladan estos sonidos cotidianos a una composición musical. 

Esta propuesta fue la ganadora del Premio Jóvenes Creadores Bancafé del año 2001, certamen que actuó como mecenas del proyecto galardonado tras una convocatoria anual. Entre los beneficiarios de otras ediciones tenemos a artistas tales como: Javier Payeras, Regina Galindo, Fernando Poyón, Sandra Monterroso y Jorge De León, etc. 

La idea fue conceptualizada por Roberto "El Pérez" Samayoa en el año 2001, quién además invitó a los dj's e ingenieros de sonido que seleccionaron las voces y ruidos registrados in-situ en varios sitios y localizaciones tan dispares como: estaciones de autobuses, ferias patronales, interiores de iglesias, comedores de mercado, plazas y calles que albergan a humoristas, pastores evangélicos, vendedores ambulantes, asistentes de transporte y transeúntes... todos intérpretes de una memoria histórica que se vive diariamente a través de estas expresiones y entonaciones que sólo encontramos en el país Guatemalteco, ya sea en español, quiché, qeqchí u otras lenguas del territorio nacional.

La edición física se conformó por 500 CD's que llevaban impreso las siguiente introducción del artista:
 
“Encontramos que en la voz humana se esconden los sentimientos colectivos de un pueblo. Por ello acudimos a los sitios populares de la city: el Mercado Central, la 18 calle, la Feria de Jocotenango y La Terminal. Grabamos a escondidas a fruteras, merolicos, gritones, brochas y demás gente que vive de anunciar productos por medio de su propia voz. De allí obtuvimos estas 11 rolas que ponen de manifiesto el rico panorama de la escena musical electrónica guatemalteca."

"Icarus" was a notion to Greek Mythology and the Myth of Daedalus and Icarus. The work includes Airplane sound recordings from Manchester Airport. Binaural microphones were used for these recordings. (2014, 2-channels)

This miniature is place-specific (harbour) and it includes an amalgam of real-world soundscapes and abstract soundscapes, with smooth transitions between them. Pitched material is also present in the abstract soundscapes sections. I attempted to focus on the nostalgic feeling I develop when promenading on a Hellenic island harbour before departing and I aimed to depict this emotion through the sonic textures of the boats themselves, as well as through an abstract pitched soundscape which consisted of transformed pitched material in combination with transformed boat sound textures. Dérive was commissioned by La Muse En Circuit as the prize in the Concours Luc Ferrari.

Dérive is a stereo acousmatic work, started at the studios of La Muse En Circuit and finished in the composer's own studio. The piece was premiered at the Archipel Festival, Geneva, March 22nd 2013. 

I crisscrossed the city of Paris in search of sounds... My itinerary was built from walks, all having as their point of departure the official centre of Paris, the point 48.8534°N 2.3488°E on the square in front of Notre-Dame Cathedral.

I don't wish to explain too much about this piece: instead, I prefer for the listener to be led through the work by their ear and imagination, much as I was led around the streets of Paris. Dérive seeks to explore the connections between environments... But Dérive is not only a documentary work: above all, it is poetic and mythological, a reading of the city at the present time, an exploration of the sounds, spaces, histories and cultures that shape Paris.

I walked over 100 kilometers in order to gather the materials for Dérive. I walked the full length of both banks of the Seine within the boundary of Boulevard Périphérique, recording the sounds of boats, gulls, the constant fluctuations of the river, it's voice rushing and changing, reverberating in tunnels and under bridges, merging with the sounds of traffic in the open air. I recorded the tombs of the Panthéon, the streets of Montmartre, the ambience and beautifully melancholic songs of Sacré-Couer, Notre Dame and its surrounding areas; the creaking floorboards of the house of Gustave Moreau, the city sounds from the top of the Eiffel Tower, the tunnels of the Metro, dozens of street performers, office workers playing ping-pong during lunch breaks, children playing in Place des Vosges and...

At the conclusion of this work, it seems to me that Paris is a city of flow and friction, of movement and interruption. But perhaps more than this, it is a place of saturation and juxtaposition. I could walk 100 kilometers more, following the flow and haltering rhythms of the city, in silent reverie.
