The fireworks are popping in anticipatory, tentative patterns. 
The air is sweet and cool moving in from the bay and tinged with sulfur as it finds its way through the second floor window. 

I am warm. I am here.
I am elsewhere.

A static sound is looping on the speakers. 
I am thinking of a time - 11 years ago - when the TV ran in static loops perceivable only to our spartan party.
We were many floors above the moneyed district. 
We were sat still inside of four seasons passing. 
I was young then and I’m young now.
We brought weapons supplied by a scientist who ran riot with the angels. 
We were from everywhere.
In the morning, when the parade rumbled oblivious below us, we knew it signaled only for US.
Soused, we fed one to the east-bound eagles.
We tunneled back to the angels at high speed.
We hollered modest rodent hymns and breathed in heavy Hs.

We paid and paid.

We got our money’s worth.

1/2 beatless, cinematic squall and 1/2 bass blender. Lots of micro-edits, extreme time-stretching, and general disregard for the source material's chastity in pursuit of a greater narrative whole. Inspired by early 80s Cold War atmosphere. Mix runs the exact length of time it takes to have a morning Spreewald pickle, pull on your favorite grey turtleneck, do your morning stretches, and sprint at full speed from your grey apartment into the tunnel you and your fellow Uni Studenten have been digging under the Berlin Wall for the past five months. And it ends with the sounds of Bjork fumbling around in a bat cave in the Bahamas. ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED??!!

It contains direct or indirect references to him, sounds from studio and live recordings having to do with or inspired by him, a recording of him describing his plans for The Factory, sounds from albums for which he created the art, abstruse connect-the-dots references to his techniques and his more popular work, and excerpts from sound collages wherein he is credited as “silence”.

I had a serious ear infection when I was young. While I was in treatment, an army medic scratched my ear drum with a sharp implement. My hearing has been strange ever since.

I lay in bed listening to the sound of the heater. Through the filter of my injured ear, white noise could take on almost vocal intonations. If I allowed my mind’s eye to become unfocused enough, the hisses and ambient static could sound like conversation. Or scraping violin strings. Or choral music of indistinct origin.

This experience has informed the sounds that I make.

I sit down with intentions of making a beat.
I hate sequencing drums.
I end up creating endless effects chains and malleable textures.
I carve chunks of musical elements from the textures.

This sounds like waves of cavalry advancing in a dust storm of their own kinetic design.
Descending under the cover of a massive cloud pushing its shadow across an open green plain.

I can hear choral elements encircling and running the length of the scene, percussive elements running alongside the cavalry, and violins caught and sent spinning in the scrum's velocity.

When I witness a cloud do this in nature, there is an urge to run.
I cannot explain this urge.
I assume it has to do with an ancestor ambushed by an opposing force using the shadows of clouds for cover in open terrain.

You see the shadow approaching.
You wonder if it will rain.
You mentally map your journey home.
The shadow overtakes you and you’re surrounded.
You should have run.
Maybe your descendants will learn from your mistake.

Now I have an urge to run when I see a cloud’s shadow rapidly advancing toward me on an open plane.

A primal thing.

This file consists of multiple run-throughs of the sequence with different compression settings engaged on each run.
I felt each compression setting accentuated certain elements and pulled them to the fore.

The sound source was a string patch from the Arturia Solina V soft synth.
