10-year old Griffin’s life was turned upside down this past June. That’s because Griffin was diagnosed with a rare type of cancer. Despite the challenges he’s faced, Griffin and his family are united in his fight against this terrible disease.

Over the past 10 years Rylan has endured a number of surgeries and procedures that have changed his life. But October 8th of this year is the day that changed Rylan and his mom, Shaunda, lives forever. That’s the day Rylan was diagnosed with an incredibly rare genetic disorder. 

Today Rylan is a happy and animated young man with a smile that can light up a room.

Baby Grady is a fighter. His mom, Julie, credits the IWK for saving her son’s life not just once – but TWICE. 

Grady has been through a lot in his five months of life. But today he is a happy and healthy baby, thanks to his amazing care team here at the IWK.

He was born 13 weeks early in November weighing only 1 pound, 13 ounces and the IWK’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit has been Barrett’s home ever since.

Connor Poplar has been through a lot since being diagnosed with a very aggressive form of cancer in August. 

Despite the challenges he’s faced, Connor is a happy and energetic little boy who is getting ready to begin his final round of chemotherapy.

When Eva MacDougall was just a year old, her body temperature skyrocketed, causing her to have a seizure.

Surprisingly common in young children, this seizure could have been a one-time event, but Eva would go on to have many more in the coming years.

With the support of the IWK, 17-year-old Rebecca Boyd has overcome a severe kidney condition and undergone an extensive back surgery – all within the last four years.

Those experiences helped her realize that the IWK was the best place to turn for support when she began struggling with anxiety and panic attacks.

Will was airlifted to the IWK last spring after weeks of having a continuous fever. He was diagnosed with a rare immune condition called HLH.

He’s had a long road of treatment since that time, including receiving a bone marrow transplant this summer.

We caught up with Will’s family at the IWK a few weeks ago while he was receiving his daily treatment.

Olivia Boutilier was born at the IWK in November with complications involving her abdomen.

She underwent surgery when she was just hours old and today she is thriving thanks to the care she received at the IWK.

Alexis Fletcher was a kind, sensitive teenager and talented dancer who cared deeply about those around her. She also struggled with feelings of depression. 

In December of 2015, Alexis passed away as a result of her mental illness. 

Through their grief, Alexis’ family have come together to help other youth who suffer from mental illness.

The Maritime community was first introduced to Mia in 2011, when she was three years old. During a regular check-up, her doctor felt a mass in Mia’s tummy. She was immediately admitted to the hospital in Moncton where it was discovered that she had a tumor on her kidney.

Today, Mia is a healthy 9-year-old and our Change Challenge Hero. Here is Mia’s story from our 2011 Radiothon.

When young Mackenzie bumped her head during a bout of the flu, the virus started to affect her body in an unusual way.

A CT scan at the Georges Dumont Hospital showed that her brain was swollen. 

She was immediately airlifted to the IWK, where she was admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).

When Lauren Whiteway started high school, she began to experience symptoms of Selective Mutism, an anxiety disorder that left her unable to speak in specific situations.
	
One year later, Lauren also began to experience Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). One day, Lauren had an OCD impulse that she could not speak at all. As a result, she went completely mute. 

Lauren was referred to the IWK Emergency Department, where she was admitted to the Garron Centre for Child & Adolescent Mental Health
