This is theme 03 - Exotica. It was first grounded into a classic Les Baxter/Martin Denny riff, then some improvised reverb guitar quickly turned it into a John Zorn/Marc Ribot territory. The end is maybe just Orgasmo Sonore's jazz prog craziness.

Following our deep jazz reissue series we are proud to announce the release of Cossi Anatz (means "Comment ça va ? in french southern language - "How are you doing ?) 
This long awaited reissue is an overlooked french jazz album with a real singular sound mixing the North African, Arabic and Occitan music (traditional music from Southern France) with free/spiritual. Composed and partly recorded live by Michel Marre, one of the spearhead of L'Intercommunal Free Dance Orchestra (founded by François Tusques) with René Nan on drums (who also played with Marius Cultier), Jazz Afro-occitan is written on the cover and it's clearly the case when you put the needle on wax you instantly feel  that are quite obvious here, especially in the brass & percussions. 
Some brilliant tracks like the beautiful deep avant jazz Al Coltrane or the monster spiritual oriental jazz Aden Arabie with great Fender solo. One of my favorite track is Bourrée Du Céor a 8'm long deep modal jazz number with a raw live, almost rural sound !

IXCHEL are simmering with excitement to present a super limited release from the formidable Yazz Ahmed entitled ‘A Shoal of Souls’.

The release marks the final chapter of her 2017 ‘La Saboteuse’ - an explosive album that turned heads worldwide, scooped numerous best of ’17 lists, as well as becoming a heavyweight UN certified UNESCO album of the decade. High praise for an artist on her second full length release.

‘A Shoal of Souls’ cements the formidable relationship that has been established between Yazz and Sophie Bass. Sophie is one of the most exciting illustrators currently operating worldwide; still in her twenties, her enlivening work across the Jazz scene has already sparked comparisons with Reid Miles. She was given free response to create the stunning four panel gatefold artwork for La Saboteuse, before being tasked to remix her own artwork where she captured the electronic rhythm and groove of the Hector Plimmer, DJ Khalab and Blacksea Não Maya reworks for the genre-breaking ‘La Saboteuse Remixed’ EP.

Music is intrinsic to Sophie’s creative process, fuelling her distinctive style that embodies symbolism and social justice. On seeing her music visually “come alive” Yazz was overwhelmingly inspired to create, this feeling best captured in Yazz’s presentation of the movement to Sophie.

“I was inspired to compose this piece  - compelled actually - after seeing your amazing, evocative, artwork for Chapter Two. Suddenly seeing my inner destroyer, La Saboteuse, given physical form as a living breathing entity made me gasp  - a real jaw dropping moment.

The way that you transposed psychological concepts into a physical image - my anti-muse literally dragging the victim into the depths… it really helped cement the whole idea - seeing how dangerous and evil she can be. 

I was already thinking about the migrants who perished at sea when I named the chapter The Shoal of Souls, and this new composition is dedicated to all the people who have lost their lives crossing the sea in search of a better future.

I hope the music conveys the strength and power of the human spirit, the bravery to risk everything for their families, the anger I feel at the response of the West, a lack of empathy, a lack of compassion. They are not a swarm, they are us - humans.

The music is also inspired by Sufism, the idea of whirling and turning, falling into a trance, a dream. I see a mirror with the whirling turning ocean, a whirlpool of lost souls, of untold stories, talents and lives unfulfilled: joining together in the eternal dance and rhythm of a vast shoal of fish which seems to beat like a heart.”

Presented with the intertwining of two mammoth creatives we were compelled to create something truly special….

The record comes heavyweight, as a limited collectors edition worthy of the discogs-breaking prices La Saboteuse is currently fetching. Cementing the collaboration, Yazz’s music forms the A side while on the B is Sophie’s artwork; a whirlpool of fish and souls spinning backwards into the ocean when played, embodying the voice of the music.

Copies 1 - 50 come numbered and include a limited edition print of the cover art signed by Yazz. The release also marks the first time a Yazz Ahmed test pressing has ever been available to buy.

January 12th, 2020, a Sunday night in Toronto - Matthew Tavares and Leland Whitty (of BADBADNOTGOOD fame) are reunited at Burdock for a live improvised Jazz session. The pair are joined on stage by bassist Julian Anderson - Bowes and drummer Matt Chalmers as part of Burdock’s Piano Fest, an annual event at the city's brewery and music hall.

Two days later an email from Matthew hits Mr Bongo's inbox... "I think it turned out amazing, brought some really nice recording gear and it sounds almost like a studio record, thought I'd share. Moments definitely get to the jazzier side but there is some spiritual moments that are so far out". The Bongo office were all blown away by this free-flowing session, one which sounded like a well-rehearsed set at the end of a long tour, rather than a one-take improvised assembly. The chemistry between the musicians is magical. The tight friendship and musical connection between Tavares and Whitty are self - evident, however, Chalmers and Anderson - Bowes have a great contribution to make too. They act as the solid foundation that leaves Tavares and Whitty free to roam and explore moments of darkness and light, intensity and beauty. From the first time of hearing this intimate session, we knew this had to be shared.

The same quartet feature on Matthew Tavares & Leland Whitty's 2020 album 'Visions'. The plan to promote 'Visions' was to tour, with each night comprising a uniquely improvised set. Sadly due to world events, this couldn't happen, but for now 'January 12th' is a snapshot of the wizardry that would have been from four amazing musicians at the top of their game.

Le 4 février on avait envie de célébrer la naissance d’une grande dame dont l’histoire aura été l’un des actes fondateurs du grand mouvement des droits civils aux États-Unis : Rosa Parks. Et parce qu’on a pris la fâcheuse habitude de tout célébrer en musique, on s’est lancé dans un mix anniversaire en l’honneur de la « dame du bus ».

On aurait pu plonger oreilles et âmes dans la soul américaine, celle-là même enfantée par les Civils Rights Movements – le « Change is gonna come » de Sam Cooke, Syl Johnson et son « Am i black enough for you », Aretha Franklin et le « R.E.S.P.E.C.T » qu’elle impose - mais on a préféré nous pencher sur tous ceux et celles qui auront tenté de rendre hommage à Rosa Parks en chanson : du « Sister Rosa » des Neville Brothers et de Christian Mcbride, de Talib Kweli, Nas, Roots & Blue qui la citent aux cotés en compagnie de Martin Luther King ou Malcolm X, de l’hommage « mi-figue mi-raisin » d’Outkast – fantadtique succès d’audience refroidi par le procès que leur intentera et gagnera Rosa Parks. Et puis, vous pourrez écouter celle qui a tant inspiré Rosa Parks dans ses combats, celle que Joan Baez aura célébré en 1963 à Washington lors d’une premières grandes marches des Civils Rights Movements, l’immense Odetta et son puissant « Oh Freedom ». Car, au final, c’est de cela dont il s’agit…
