"Afra7" for Anun and Sring Quartet

"Tempesta" for string quartet op. 8 is a one movement piece. In fact it was originally the fourth movement of my first (denied) quartet. Some of the themes results from the first movement. It has the sonata form built on three themes. After a threatening intro announcing the approach of the hurricane, the turbulent first theme sturm und drang appears, followed by the thunders of the second theme. Then comes a calm third theme (descending fourth) which shall be generously used throughout the piece (in both original form and its inversion into ascending fifth). The development section combines first and third themes in a complex rhythmic figures, before dramatically closing the piece with the second theme.

Lebanese composer, graduated from the Lebanese conservatory on 1998 with Diploma in Harmony and western music Theory. He composed numerous vocal Works performed by prestigious singers such as international Soprano Rima Tawil, famous Lebanese singer RONZA, Sopranos Nadine NASSAR and Caroline SOLAGE, as well as Baritone Raymond GHATTAS. Some of his musical compositions were performed by Lebanese oriental and Symphony Orchestras, and conducted by late Dr. Walid GHOLMIEH, Vladimir SIRENKO, Alain Pâris, Manfred MUSAUER, Lubnan BAALBAKI, Paul-René SAFA and André Hajj.

In 2002, commissioned by OMM (Ordre Maronite Mariamite), he composed « Portrait d’une âme » a chamber music suite for Cello and piano reflecting the life of Ste Thérèse de L’Enfant Jésus, premiered at Sehayle monastery in October 2002 by Angela Hounanian (Cello) and Dolcy Lawoun (Piano).

Between 2003 and 2009 he composed sacred music for NDU Choir, especially Operetta “to the end of times” and Oratorio “PAULUS”,

In 2010 he composed music for Joe Moukarzel’s Operette « Gibran Lawhet Omr » premiered at Betroun international festival 2010 and at Casino du Liban in January 2011. 

In 2011, Commissioned by NDU celebrating the 100 years old of famous poet Said AKL, he composed Lieder in Arabic on poems by the later poet « naghmat men daftarihi » and Faxreddin II cantata for Soprano, Choir and Piano, premiered at Palais des congrès- DBAYH in October 2011, by RONZA, Dolcy Lawoun and NDU Choir directed by Fr. Khalil Rahme, in a memorable concert under the auspices of Lebanese minister of culture H.E. Mr. Gaby LAYOUN and in presence of Said AKL and many Lebanese and international public and artistic figures.

In 2012, his suite for Anun and string Quartet « HANIN » was performed at Jounieh music festival, by late and famous Anun player Iman HOMSI and NDU string quartet, with poetic readings by poet Habib YOUNES. 

In September 2012, his sacred piece AGNUS DEI was performed in the Papal Holy Mass celebrated in Beirut by H.H. Pope Benedictus XVI and sung by international Soprano Rima TAWIL.

In March 2013 his Symphonic Poem « the return » was premiered in Beirut by the LPO Lebanese Symphony Orchestra conducted by Maestro Alain Pâris in a concert supported by ESA.

Commissioned by the director of the Lebanese Conservatory Mr. Hanna AMIL, he composed the “Human Rights” Cantata for soprano, tenor, baritone, choir and Orchestra, to be premiered in a special Concert at that occasion on December 6th 2013 by LPO conducted by Maestro Lubnan BAALBAKI.

I. Kanaan is the soundtrack composer of Samir Habchi’s four episodes TV series “GIBRAN” broadcasted on LBCI in 2010, as well as Rami FARAH’s musical short movie Pandora (2012),

Among his unpublished compositions: Symphonic Poems “Genocide” for Symphony Orchestra and “Honor. Sacrifice. Fidelity » for Solo Cello and Symphony Orchestra; “friandises” for Flute and Piano, “Escapade” for Oud and string Quartet.

But his most important work remains Qadmus, a grand Opera in Arabic in 3 acts on Arabic epic script written by Said Akl.
