Memories of...
In days gone by, OneTen Old Street was home to the Unstoppable Artfairy Sound System, headed by Adam & Logan. Many of you will remember spending riotous Saturday evenings dancing the night away and some of you won't remember a thing (as the saying goes, if you can't remember Oneten, you weren't there). Sadly, the Oneten venue doesn't exist any more - well it does, but it is a funny Thai restaurant now, but if it was still there, this is the sort of thing you might hear.

Those of you familiar with 110 Part One (and that should be all of you - keep up), will know that this is another homage to the glory days of Oneten Old Street where several of you shook your stuff to the unstoppable Artfairy Soundsystem, as directed by Adam and Logan. Funnily enough, I never really fancied the Thai restaurant which is now resident at 110 Old Street, Shoreditch, but if Onten was still the fabulous establishment it once was, these would be some of the tunes that would go with it.

Here's one from Unsual and Electric duo Adam & Mark from back in 2008. It's a snapshot of the kind of things we were playing out live back in those days: tunes we like to get everyone going and a fair few of our own records slug it out in twelve rounds of dubby chunky technoid dance sparring!

U&E VS THE WORLD

Good old taxi drivers. After a long night out on the decks they can be like an angel winging you home with speed and grace. But they do vary massively, don't they? From the decidedly grumpy to the downright dangerous, from the casually racist to those with the sense of direction of Mr Magoo on bath salts, the late night taxi is a veritable lottery. But the best taxis are those nocturnal minicab guys who have the nice new black saloon smelling of Feu Orange and that steroid stereo with lots of lights that's turned up so loud it hurts when you blink. After one particular soirée I was whisked through the deserted streets of our beloved metropolis in such a vehicle and it gave me the idea for this mix. The driver had a really great selection of tunes - each one specially played rather than just off a compilation cd. A rarity indeed. This is my homage to that unknown driver who still had me humming his tunes the next morning… and even many years hence. Surely there must be other taxi drivers out there who could provide a source of inspiration?

Radiators and Drains, Baby!

A decade ago, researchers in the field discovered that there are in fact only two types of people in the world. In a widely conducted survey by the iyrie.com research unit*, it was revealed that these two opposing categories are: a) Radiators — Individuals who warm you up, contributing to your general happiness and health, and are always willing and able; b) Drains — Individuals who osmotically take energy and wellbeing from you, drain your ‘puissance‘ and leave you feeling depleted.

But despite what we might think, the bulk of the myriad of mysteries in this great wide universe remain unsolved. These are things that keep you awake at night. Like does dark matter — a form of matter that is undetectable by emitted or scattered electromagnetic radiation, but whose presence is inferred from gravitational effects on visible matter and background radiation exist? Does its existence account for discrepancies between measurements of the mass of galaxies, clusters of galaxies and the entire universe made through dynamical and general relativistic means? We may never know. Whilst this may be somewhat troubling, it does add up to the conclusion that the past, the future and stuff is really quite brilliant.

So I think that you will agree with me when I say that this conclusively proves that I dig archaeology, and it is pretty hard to dispute that geology rocks, I think we can all conclude that astronomy is out of this world. Nurse — the screens!

A Long Time Ago When Everything Was In Black And White…*

Now, you youngsters, don’t forget — it’s a marathon, not a sprint.
But I digress. Those loyal few of you with long memories will remember the heady days of the Art Fairy parties. Some of it, anyway. The reason I mention this is this mix is all the sort (as well as some) of the tunes myself and the venerable mister Logan Fisher used to play on those fun–packed nights (Bad Passion, Star Spangled Banner, Risky Disco, The Quarks and even Soul Mechanik — machine guns and all), plus a few that have come about since but would have fitted in nicely. We nicked a quite a number of tunes off Logan’s website (haulesballs.com — most excellent) and he was gracious enough not to mind. Then we had a bit of a dig around in the back of the 2000–2002 section of the records, et on fait du lèche du vitrines.
Anyway, welcome the timely return of the artfairy unstoppable sound
machine, vinyl crackles and all. Happy days. One final thought, kids —
remember that although “Good Santa” may seem like just yesterday,
history is a thing of the past.

Big props to my man like Mikei, who contributed the bulk of the tunes here, from a special back to the ‘90s Kensal Massive selection, vinyl and all. Nice One. Throw in a good healthy dose of iyrie! style classics from the same era mixed in a straight-up old school style, et viola! We are cooking at Me Ma’s (because Pa don’t know where the kitchen is).

Well, Enough About Me, Let’s Talk About You*

Well, it’s the round dozen of the Junk in the Trunk radio shows on spaceivaderradio.com. So whilst the ever expanding iyrie! unstoppable dancing universe always aims to please, it’s time for a bit of “me” time. So as some sort of abitrary finalé, we have a collection of the tunes that I am feeling, listening to and playing — regardless of genre or whether people think they are cool or even if they really belong together. Plus ça change. Well, to me they do go together and here it is. It’s the familiar schizophrenic eclectic mix back in favour, but this is all about me so I’m allowed to play it how I like. All I can say is that I think every single one of these records deserves to be heard. The bulk of the mix is quite deep and that’s the way we sound right now.

POTTERTON 8 • Let’s Go USA!

So this is Christmas. A time of love peace and unity. John Lewis have made an ad that provides a compelling argument for the sterilisation of the entire middle class, there are celebrities queueing up to make a few quid by bungee jumping en masse like sequin covered fox-trotting lemmings into Holly (topical) Valence’s cleavage whilst singing a dubstep version of Frog Chorus (or something), and everyone is desperately trying not to think about how much soap-on-a-rope costs this year for uncle Peter.

Thus it is time for yet another very iyrie! Christmas mix. The usual form, fun but deliberately unchristmassy. Guaranteed to propel you on your way as you encounter the following this festive season:

1) Running around wazzed up on Disaronno on the rocks and Morrison’s marzipan-lined* mince pies till the early hours pretending you like Karaoke because all the girls do

2) Partaking in the traditional seasonal lurgey that gets spread around amongst the great unwashed as they huddle together at the school nativity and then conveniently is brought into the office for those of us who don’t have children.

3) Arranging to meet all the people you don’t really like much next year  “When things are quieter” in the hope that they’ll forget and you can avoid them until you turn them down again next year.

One of the greatest pleasures in life has to be record shopping in New York. Records you have wanted for ever, records you never knew existed, and records you wanted to exist but thought they probably didn’t. So on my recent visit I was dismayed to find that so many of my favourite vinyl dustspots were now closed.

Vinyl Mania (ironic name) as well as The One Across The Road  - can’t remember the name - still full of records but looking pretty closed, plus lots of great smaller stores too numerous to mention.

However, there are still some amazing things to be found there if you’re willing to look hard, and this mix is a compilation of some of the gems dug up on that trip. I’m also sending this mix to all the stores I bought records at, the pick of which I can recommend;

So it’s up to good old Reggae Perrin to bring in that dub and try and ease your credit crunch blues. Wishing you an Indian Summer. Yeah, right!

And so Unusual & Electric was born - dubby wonky discoid techno chunkiness for dancing and late night bedsit action.

The world always becomes a brighter place when this bunch of seasoned head-cases drop their strides and uncork their sonic snake. Their fifth outing is the expected strange brew which still sounds like nobody else, a triple-headed technicolour monster gesticulating wildly from Godzilla's back passage. 'DMT 505' harks back to early 90s warpo-dub with dense vocal loops topped with haunting vocal line underpinned with giraffe-buttock panoramas and one of those classic Orbital/Spooky uplifto-riffs. 'Initiator' cooks up a vamping soul strut in a steaming vat of dubaphonic heaven while 'Sonar Daddy' ventures further into juddering dub territory with electro-boogie y-fronts. Out on their own.

We may never know. In fine Credit Crunch tradition, much of this mix has been down the back of the sofa with the biscuit crumbs since 2002, and with good reason. Is the proletariat ready for this? No matter - in these tough times, you get what you’re given. To misquote Grandmaster Flash, it may not be the slickest, it may not be the coolest, but it definitely is the weirdest.
