I was something like 19 when I first heard the fiery horns of Fela Kuti's "Lady" on my friend Nicolas' speakers in my neighbourhood of Paris. This was the exact time when I realized that some artists were making mind-blowing music in the Southern hemisphere. My first "convincing" introduction to African music, to non-Western sounds. I went straight to one of the Virgin Megastore of Champs-Elysées (which doesn't exist anymore - and that's why I'm telling this story), unstuck a €3 price tag from a cheap item and stuck it on a Fela vinyl box set. This box set contained 6 albums including ITT. The guitar riff of this tune has been stuck in my ear since then.This ITT remix is my contribution to Fela's 75th birthday celebration. Long live Fela!

"I was always a big fan of the 70's Fania records but I could never dance to that music properly. I know I'm not alone here. I lived in Latin countries for years, got some friends to help me overcome my motor coordination issues, watched dozens of youtube tutorials but it didn't help. The best I could do while hearing those records was to nod my head like it was another hip-hop tune. So after having wasted numerous flirting opportunities with Latin girls over the past decade I decided to transpose Celia Cruz's music into some more familiar rhythm patterns. I tried to keep the craziness and the passionate feel while adding some of my own head-nodding (and discreet hips shaking) music culture. Made in Dublin Tropical, North side of the Liffey, while experiencing an incredibly mild winter."

Solange’s 2016 album has been on heavy rotation in the last couple of years and those songs will for ever remind me of the good and bad episodes of that period of my life. Solange’s words “Drink it away / Dance it away / Work it away / Sexed it away / Read it away” on that minimal groove still resonate deep in my chest. So when I heard some individual tracks of “Cranes in the Sky” being broadcast in an episode of the song exploder podcast (http://songexploder.net/solange), I sampled the acapella bits and the synth harp to play them in my live set. The result would get such a positive crowd reaction that I was pushed from all sides to finish this remix and share it with the world. The remix was premiered on Gilles Peterson’s BBC radio show last week-end and got positive reviews from all around the world. It is now available as a free download from my website. Enjoy and share!

French producer DJ iZem started writing music during a 6 year-long musical adventure through Brazil, Spain, Argentina and Ireland. Now based in Lisbon, his unique hybrid sound joins the dots between cutting-edge beatmaking and subtle organic Latin / African influences.

His first EP, released in 2011, features Brazilian and Irish vocalists and was heavily played by radios and DJ's around the globe: BBC's Gilles Peterson and KCRW's Anthony Valadez are some of his early supporters. After remixing for Lucas Santtana and ZZK records in 2012, his second release will be out in January 2013.

iZem vs Michael Kiwanuka - I'll Get Along

With “A Muhive”, new-born Elis Records starts 2020 with a new collaboration and exploration off the beaten track. A third release signed by Mozambican singer Milton Gulli and French producer iZem mixing afrobeat and Portuguese hip-hop.

Producer, singer and DJ, Milton Gulli has always given great importance to cultural and sound syncretisms. From Mozambican descent, he grew up between Portugal, Saudi Arabia and Madeira island, he sought to bridge the gap separating the two musical worlds that have influenced him growing up. This new release is a perfect example of that: with lyrics rapped in Portuguese, and an instrumental that samples the London Afrobeat Orchestra, the resulting sound is a futuristic hybrid between Nigerian afrobeat and lusophone hip-hop.

In ‘A Muhive’ (‘The Thief’), Milton accuses the injustice that corruption causes to every segment of the population, from the madala (a middle-aged woman) to the criança (the child), and, by speaking in second person, he shows that the scourge not only concerns the authorities but the society as a whole. The energetic rhythm of the song reinforces the idea that it is nonetheless not an option to give up just yet, and that if the efforts we put in cheating were put at use in a more honest attitude, everyone would benefit from it.
