Hip-hop song written to a close friend who was struggling with addiction, self-abuse, and on the verge of suicide.  Written and recorded in 2004.

Experimental hip-hop track that explores the themes of karma and fate working behind the scenes in shaping how everything unfolds.  Written and recorded in 2004.

Echoes

Punk rock track about motivating yourself to break out of ruts and change your environment to improve negative situations.  Written and recorded in 2005.

Something

Hip-hop track, created with a group of artist/musician/skater friends I went to high school with.  We wrote this song while reuniting on a visit back years later , after we had all moved onto adulting.

The lyrics reflect on growing up in a tough environment—an area affected by poverty and crime—where open-mindedness and creativity were not the norm and were often discouraged. The song emphasizes the importance of finding a supportive community of friends to uplift each other through it all and strive for success as adults.

Through This Time

Hip-hop track about tapping into a shared universal consciousness, while simultaneously learning to think independently and resisting outside influences. Written and recorded in 2004.

Renegade

The Brothers Johnson - Strawberry Letter 23  [J aWay Remix]

This is a new edition, spinning off the coattails of the “Boardwalk Sessions” series I did live from Venice Beach 10 years ago. The vibes are a bit different now.   This time it’s themed around snowboarding, as that's my favorite place to zone out to music.

This is also kicking off a new annual tradition, showcasing tunes I collect over the season. Since this is my first mix in the series, I’ve included some of my all-time favs. RIP CharlesTheFirst ✊

The vibe is eclectic—starting light and airy, eventually building up to party time; like taking that first chair up the mountain. It takes about 15–20 minutes for the set to get jumping. If you’re not feeling it at any point, feel free to skip ahead.  The styles shift constantly.   Hope you enjoy the ride!

JaWay is the revival project of Cali-based Producer/DJ Josh Crews, who initially made his mark in the late 90s as a Turntablist and creator of Breakbeat, Drum & Bass, and Hip-Hop in Atlanta. Over the years, he has carved out a distinctive niche in the Electronic Music scene, delivering a sound that is diverse and eclectic. His music often features bass-heavy, breaky rhythms with occasional house influences; drawing inspiration from about  anything that's fun, pretty, or dope.
