haiku #378: snowflakes gently fall / cold winter’s pale sakura / I envy the birds

Not as well aligned with the subject as I'd planned, but I took a slightly unusual approach. I recorded myself reading the haiku, then used that as my sole sound source (albeit significantly processed). The result is quite interesting, if not exactly as I'd intended.

snow fluttering down [naviarhaiku584]

After watching the wonderful TV series "In My Skin", I tried to compose a track to match this touching story. While playing the piano melody on my midi keyboard, I recorded the mechanical sounds of the keys using a smartphone and a dictaphone.
This recording approach was inspired by this week's Disquiet Junto project, but doesn't follow that prompt closely.
These recordings (treated with various effects) were mixed with the piano, and strings and synth sounds were added to the track, all to support the guiding emotion drawn from the story.

Kajiwara Hashin was born in 1864 and studied under Kyoshi. Although Hashin is not very well-known as a poet, this particular haiku that he wrote is quite popular worldwide: it was first translated by Miyamori Asataro and later by R. H. Blyth.

Interpreting the haiku more literally than sensible. I stated with some binaural rain from this sound pack sold in aid of WWF Denmark: www.luftrum.com/free-field-recordings Then fired up VCV Rack to patch together the other elements, split for multitrack recording and additional effects:

This was not my original plan, but after several failed improvised takes I did things in a different order and got it under ten minutes, drums came in later than expected so used some creative EQ to emphasise their synth origin.
