I saw Christ of the common road
His river swept through my house last night
An onward swelling triumphant stream
Of common thoughts and common life.

I saw Christ upon the road
He was driving a Ford sedan
Next to him sat his pregnant wife
Her face was gentle
And a little strained.

He wore the habit of a priest
Speaking in unassuming tones
Used to babies and the mother’s grief.

I saw Christ upon my lawn
Making jokes in dubious taste
I think the company was too much
It made him hurtful in his touch.

So great his Life seems as a sea
