Following the more house & techno focused Spring Club Collection, The Visionquest dream team return with the sun-dappled Summer ‘Beach Collection’, starring Maceo Plex, Tale Of Us and Pillow Talk.

Part II of the Spring Summer Collection features a fresh selection of summer jams – a three-tiered melting pot of hot talent, dishing out a warm mix of sun drenched house steeped in soul, both dusky and bright, with an 80’s disco infusion. This next installment is testament to the ever-changing moods and winds across Visionquest sonic footprint. It sounds like the breeze and the heat of a memorable summer romance, soul music for the feet.

House maestro Maceo Plex steps up first with the bittersweet summer anthem ‘Falling’, the dreamy vocal drifts into the uplifting melody, funky guitar licks and subtle undercurrents of softly jackin’ beats build into psychedelic waves of hooky synths. Maceo Plex’s recent superb singles and Life Index album on Crosstown Rebels is a contender for album of the year.

Hot on the heels of the moody, epic ‘Dark Song EP’, Tale Of Us are back representing Visionquest with the deep melancholy of ‘Winds Of Change’. Eerie atmospheres unfold with gently broken beats, minor key bass notes and a mysterious vocal cut that penetrates the soul with its yearning clarity.

Sammy D aka Pillow Talk has been a fixture on the San Francisco house and techno scene for the past 12 years, having released as Justin Martin & Sammy D on luminary labels such as Derrick Carter’s Classic Records, Ben Watt's Buzzin'Fly and Claude Von Stroke's Dirtybird. Sammy's new project Pillow Talk (alongside production partners Michael Tello and Ryan

Williams) is straight up soul dance music. Influenced by the great RnB singers of the 50s and 60s, Sammy’s velvet vocals displayed here in the majestic ‘Love Makes Parks’ wash over the laid-back, swinging groove and the message is clear; It’s the Visionquest summer of Love.

1. Maceo Plex - Falling (VQ 005)

Label boss Stefano Noferini teams up with Samuel Dan for some heads-down business and a three-track trip to rabbit hole central. 

Kicking off with a rollercoaster bassline, the opener shuffles and grinds via the help of a snappy rhythm section. Hypnotic percussion shifts the focus on the loopiness, only to be interrupted by intricate edits and cavernous effects. &#8220;Dark Passenger&#8221; gives a subtle nod to the tribal sound but adds the menace with synth stabs and garbled electronics, while the laid-back groove provides the perfect backdrop for a sultry vocal snippet. 

Samuel Dan&#8217;s Dark Mix of the original seals the EP with classic analog bass and electronic squelches galore. An assortment of even more vocal edits and psychotic effects all add up for a twisted epilog to this groovy ride.

Tibi Dabo returns with ‘Overture’, a third tantalising single from his forthcoming Crosstown Rebels album, with remixes from Map.ache and Aline Umber.

The first two singles from the project, ‘Triple Frontier’ and ‘Licht’, have shown what Barcelona’s Tibi Dabo is all about - forward-thinking electronic music with original drums (a result of him having toured the globe with his band) and plenty of cosmic twists and character. A label favourite having dropped his ‘Isla’ EP on Crosstown Rebels back in 2022, ahead of his much-anticipated debut LP comes this third superb taster from it.

The superb ‘Overture’ is an eight-minute gem with super smooth percussion and elastic grooves, with wispy sci-fi chords and gentle synth modulations. It’s full of future feels and catchy drum funk that is sophisticated and smartly detailed with choppedup vocal fragments.

First to remix is Leipzig’s Map.ache, co-founder of Kann Records and member of the Giegling family. His take builds with fatter drums that are just as infectious, while rippling synth loops weave in and out as flashy basslines cut loose and balmy pads add extra cosmic absence to a hypnotic mix of the heady and the physical.

Aline Umber, a collaborative live project from French composers, producers and DJs Aline Brooklyn and Aman Umber, are second to remix. They run the Airfunk label and are no stranger to playing cult spots like Rex Club in Paris. Their ‘23% Eventide’ mix is a blissed-out and synth-laced trip with subtle, smeared chords and starry-eyed keys that have you gazing off into the distance as you get lost in the warm drums.

After an impressive late morning closing set at dirtybird’s latest Watergate party in Berlin, Sacha Robotti, made his way to Switzerland to play at Nordstern. Hooking up with an equally exhausted Swiss producer, "Look Like" on arrival, the tired and wired duo shared thoughts over a heady green tea session. Realising they shared a deep love for bass, they made a pact: to write a collaborative EP that would score the highest of marks from dirtybird big dog Claude VonStoke.

These two slick-back groove attacks are the end result...  “Loca Lola” is a one-way ticket to the most mischievous of party districts where an array of manipulated vocal samples bounce avidly on a bed of chop-slapping beats. Complete with head-popping stabs, cheeky wolf whistles and a carnal carnival shriek, it’s left VonStroke‘s floors floundering the world over on every roadtest. “Dropout”, meanwhile, tunes into a darker, booty-busting techfunk groove where cut-throat vocal stabs punctuate the unrelenting bassline and chest-stamping kicks. Heads down, please; this one shifts in a serious way.

What started as a comedown has turned into a fire-up.  Collab creations don’t come any better than this. Something tells us Robotti and Look Like will be locking horns again the future.

A decade on from his debut release, one of Romania's finest cultural exports returns to his favourite stomping ground with a trans- mission that showcases variety, technical skill and an intimate understanding of the dynamics of the floor.

The stripped-down, moody menace of 'The Swindle' kicks things off, dancing semi- quavers panning left and right, a mysterious male voice incanting. A bass synth motif carries the tune to a climax before its buoyant, trancey conclusion. At all times, elements unfold organically, carrying the listener away.

'Rotate' casts a busier, jacking vibe, its analogue synth cycles pinging against each other. Glimmering layers of sound create an endlessly immersive, deadly deep groove.

'Feed Me' is slower, slinkier and rougher in equal measure. The sustained synths create a gliding sensation, the male vocal first mellifluous and sung then husky and spoken.

'Chance' is a shuffling, fizzing deep house groove, precision-tooled for the dance- floor. "Let it take control" urges a male voice. Sound advice for this deliciously hypnotic groove.
