This is a song Jim McKell and I wrote one afternoon when we had nothing else to do.

In The City

I recorded this track of Jimmy McGary just a week before he died in 1992. We had recorded three tracks with, 'I Cant Get Started', being the last. I wrote this to Jimmy the day he died:

So strange this silence 
when musicians die…
It is much more than
just something missing.
Music surmounts all
the noise around us.
We hear the heavens.
Celestial sounds
those multi-metered melodies,
hallowed haloed harmonies,
rhythmic possibilities
implicitly stated,
individually notated
by each player's placing
of spacing between the notes.
Jimmy McGary
was a musician.
He would always say,
"Some musicians play,
some only listen."
He made me listen.
He took me away
to the place where muses dance
and virgins find romance
by surrendering their hearts and pants
to make love to the world
outside of their noisy heads.
When Jimmy would play
the noise went away.
That goddamned sax placed
between his lips in
a kiss few of us
will experience
-such oneness with grace-
We'll miss you Jimmy.
Without you the world's
a noisier place.
