this record was born in Leipzig, and finessed in Hanoi - emerging into a pre-covid world and gestating far too long as we all languished in lockdown. 

it's a gentle dawning; an opening blossom; an explorative rinse in the gushing monsoon of an extended pause. 

if you have a chance, do listen - either bobbing on the deck with a morning coffee, on your couch in the afternoon sunlight, or peering out your window at the gleaming evening cityscape.

It's more than a year since the genre-bending EP helm and tomes' sound has evolved, keeping a raw edge and gritty tone, each element rings clear in a dynamic and layered sound scape. Off-kilter grooves and crackly cassettes interlock with deep kicks and sizzling synthesisers; chunks of UK underground filtered through Asia's heavyweight dance scene. 

Drawing inspiration from hip hop, garage, drum and bass and many more styles, bright noise showcases a deeper, more dance floor oriented sensibility from the globe-trotting producer, and elevates and enhances a considerable back catalogue.

So… I was digging through my hard drive and unearthed this live set which was recorded by Nguyen Do Minh Quan (founder of Quanalog instruments) at Savage Hanoi in March of 2017 for an event titled ‘Space’. Savage was pretty new at that time and the excitement surrounding the venue was palpable – it was fresh and exciting to have a quality space dedicated to electronic music culture. 

Quan and I had collaborated on different projects, including Mutant Lounge, and Midweek Machines and we both agreed that some counter culture was needed to add balance to the Friday/Saturday party culture that Savage served and nurtured so well – so we tried ambient shows as an additional way to use the space and sound system, and create a balance to the scene that was blossoming. 

I am still learning about ambient music, and how to make effective, engaging electronic music that isn’t driven by a need to satisfy a dancefloor (which is also something I’m still learning about!). But… for me, this set is mostly about the Netherlands. I lived in Den Haag for a year where I was lucky enough to study a short course at the Koninklijke Conservatorium on the niche sound/art/music hybrid field of Sonology. This set consists of almost everything I went through that year, but particularly:-

-	Modular synthesis generative patches recorded onto tape.
As a part of the course we learned about modular equipment and how it worked and could be exploited. This was before the mass resurgence and repopularisation of modular systems brought about by the affordable and exciting eurorack format – before walking into the small studio at KonCon I’d never seen a module before, let alone touched one. Guided by the experienced hands of Kees Tazelar we built random generative patches and captured their sounds for further manipulation. I used to ride my bicycle through the snow early on Sunday mornings to use the space as most Sonologists were not early risers.

Although I went to KonCon to learn about alternative approaches to creating and understanding music and sound I wasn’t really psychologically ready to receive the knowledge available there… I still wanted to write and perform songs, with intros and choruses and bridges. So I collaborated with an art science student from the neighbouring university who I’ve lost contact with, and we strummed on guitars and took lyrics from diatribes discussing Buckminster Fuller’s work.

One thing that was enchanting about KonCon was that it drew people from across Europe and the world. Daniela was a renowned cellist in her homeland of Israel, and was kind enough to play cello on some pop tracks that I produced under another alias (and rarely share). We also spent some time generating cello performances that were more random (or at least less interested in organised pitch) to convert and use as control voltage for the modular system… with varied results. 

So this set has all those things… and my first ever field recordings, all filtered through and processed by the Elektron Octatrack and mashed into some kind of narrative. It’s motivated me to explore sound more deeply again and try to continue learning how to create moving, emotionally driven sonic worlds.
