Over the past few years, Andrew Osterhoudt has quietly curated a slew of comforting kosmische musik that gazes deep into the stars while peering just as deeply inward. Now, the Brooklyn-based composer sets their sights on more tangible artifacts and nearby nuance with 'Out Together', an earthbound fit of maniacal mindfulness mixed with calm chaos.
 
Constructed on a scaffold of juxtaposed symmetry, the two sides of 'Out Together' foil and compliment each other in delicate harmony. Live collaborations with Ka Baird and John Also Bennett (JAB) colligate with manipulated found sounds from records and digital audio files from old broadcasting sound libraries, recontextualized into moments of ambient turntablism. The search for harmony shines throughout. Take the final tones of A-side closer “Runoff” drifting downstream with bubbly textures and arpeggiated bliss, trying to reach harmony with the initial tones of B-side opener “Frequency.” The latter ultimately spotlights a fortuitous flute duet from Baird and JAB born from Osterhoudt’s own graphic score.
 
The patient pointillism and avant assurance of “Crowds” balances out the opposite side’s “Everyone Arriving, Eventually,” a tone poem of sand-like textures flowing through melodic reeds and other sonic detritus. “Undergrowth” awakens in a steam-drenched run of modulated meditation, focusing on Ka Baird’s singularly enraptured vocal exorcisms which perfectly reflect its B-side counterpart “The Breathing Green,” engaged in a din of rustic psychedelia with waves of buzzing, ember-like tones and unseen fauna.
 
As a whole, 'Out Together' presents a vibrant spectrum of feelings ranging from magnified isolation to zoomed-out, wide-angled euphoria.

Produced over 2 months in tandem with the development of choreography, this music started with the word bão or storm. Exploring the sensory experience of heavy tropical typhoons which annually batter the central region of Vietnam, Đoàn Thanh Toàn drew upon his own memories and those of the five collaborating dancers, all of whom grew up with this natural phenomenon as a regular fixture in their lives. 

"Originating as an urge to reflect on typhoons and most centrally, the people whose lives they churn, the piece evolved into exclamations of collective intimacy. When it starts raining, a people run. A people wait. A people look up and sing." 

As the ensemble laboured, playfully but with austere dedication, Toàn liaised closely with tomes (aka Tobias Paramore), sharing stories and outlining next steps under the tin roof at CAB Hoi An. tomes took these notes back to his home studio in Danang and blended Toàn’s emotional inferences with filtered noise, thumbed basslines, microtonal synthesiser arpeggios, and whispered voices; weaving a gradually swelling, miasmic backdrop for the artist’s movements. 

The resulting audio is a co-production dependent on many parties, most notably, Toàn, but also, the dancers, Nguyễn Tấn Đại, Nguyễn Hạ Xuân Nguyên, Nguyễn Ngọc Gia Khiêm, Phạm Thị Hồng Sâm, Trần Phương Trinh. Also Red (Nguyễn Hải Yến) and Ngô Thanh Phương from MORUA, whose residency program enabled this project.

Được thực hiện song song với quá trình biên đạo kéo dài hai tháng, các bài nhạc khởi nguồn với từ khoá: bão. Nhằm khám phá những trải nghiệm cảm quan gắn liền với những cơn bão cào xé miền Trung mỗi năm, Đoàn Thanh Toàn khơi gợi những kí ức của bản thân và của năm nghệ sĩ chuyển động, ai nấy đều lớn lên với những cơn mưa dông gió giật triền miên.  

"Dự án bắt đầu với nỗi niềm suy tưởng về “bão” và nhất là những con người luôn phải oằn mình trong bão ở vùng quê mình. Khi tác phẩm dần phát triển, nó trở thành những cơn ứa trào của một nỗi thân thương tập thể. Mỗi lúc trời mưa, chúng tôi chạy. Chúng tôi đợi. Chúng tôi ngửa mặt lên trời và hát." 


Dưới mái tôn của CAB Hoi An, nhóm vũ công vừa chơi đùa vừa lao động miệt mài trong lúc Toàn làm việc chặt chẽ với tomes (aka Tobias Paramore), cùng chia sẻ những câu chuyện và vạch ra kế hoạch tỉ mỉ.  tomes đem những ý tưởng này về studio của mình ở Đà Nẵng, hoà trộn những diễn giải cảm xúc của Toàn với tiếng nhiễu lọc (filtered noise), những thumbed basslines, microtonal synthesiser arpeggios, và tiếng thì thầm; đan dệt nên một không gian âm thanh khắc khoải, mỗi lúc một căng phồng, bao trùm lấy chuyển động của các nghệ sĩ. 

 m thanh thành phẩm là một sự kết hợp phụ thuộc vào nhiều phía, bao gồm Toàn cùng các nghệ sĩ Nguyễn Tấn Đại, Nguyễn Hạ Xuân Nguyên, Nguyễn Ngọc Gia Khiêm, Phạm Thị Hồng Sâm, và Trần Phương Trinh. Ngoài ra phải kể đến Red (Nguyễn Hải Yến) và Ngô Thanh Phương, những người đỡ đầu của MORUA đã cùng thai nghén dự án này.

Introducing "ReyMod Mod Megamix" – a nostalgic journey through the electronic soundscape of the late '90s. This extraordinary megamix is a compilation of tracks meticulously crafted by ReyMod using the pioneering software ModEdit between the years 1994 and 1999.

ModEdit, a trailblazing MOD file editor for DOS developed by Norman Lin, made its mark in the early '90s as one of the first MOD software available for PCs. Its significance lies not only in its historical relevance but also in its unique features, setting the stage for the evolution of digital music production.

One standout characteristic of ModEdit was its ability to play MODs through the PC speaker without the need for additional sound hardware, a groundbreaking achievement achieved through the code crafted by Mark J. Cox. This innovative feature opened up new possibilities for music enthusiasts and artists alike, enabling them to create and enjoy electronic music without the constraints of external equipment.

The most celebrated version, v2.00, released in 1991, provided a user interface divided into three key sections: the Pattern Editor, Pattern Sequence Table, and Sample List. Navigation through these sections was primarily keyboard-driven, offering a hands-on and immersive experience for music creators.

The Pattern Editor, the heart of ModEdit, displayed intricate details of the current pattern in the sequence table. With four columns corresponding to the four channels of the MOD file, each column was further divided into three sub-columns for pitch (note name and octave number), sample number (linked to the sample list), and special effects codes. This design allowed for direct and precise editing of values, reminiscent of a hex editor but tailored for music composition.

"ReyMod Mod Megamix" pays homage to the golden era of electronic music production, encapsulating the essence of creativity unleashed through ModEdit during its heyday. Each track is a testament to ReyMod's artistic prowess and the revolutionary capabilities of ModEdit, transporting listeners back to a time when the digital frontier was still being explored, one note at a time.

Bottlesmoker is Anggung Suherman and Ryan Adzani, an electronic music duo from Bandung, Indonesia, formed in 2008. Bottlesmoker has been known for their experimental approach to song-making, constantly pushing boundaries and exploring new possibilities. One remarkable aspect of their work is their adaptation of traditional Indonesian instruments. They ingeniously incorporate the sounds and techniques of these instruments into their electronic compositions, resulting in a fusion of traditional and modern elements.

In a truly innovative move, Bottlesmoker has even ventured into the realm of creating music for plants. They have developed a unique process where they use plants as instruments, allowing the natural responses of the plants to generate melodies and harmonies.
