HI everybody, I’m very proud for this 32nd My Favorite Things Show to have has guest my dear friend Julia Weck from Sao Paulo (Brazil), and trust me it wasn’t easy  (Joke) !

Julia is a young DJ and Record enthusiast who has been featured as DJ in jazz and music festivals in her home town and is frequently seen playing in local clubs. She is also member of the women crew Cremosa Vinil and is one of the co-founders of the collective Uh! Manas TV.

As usual I have opened the show with my last recent Digging tracks with a deep and fusion flavour like the come back of « JD73 », the new EP of « The Sultan's Swing » and the fantastic new album of « Tamil Rogeon ». Between two Jazz is Dead albums, the prolific Adrian Younge has founded the time to delivered a new project with a BLM athmosphere called « American Negro ». his « Margaret Garner » is one of my personal favorite track from this one. before the Great Hour of Julia, i have finised my first part with the live cover of J-Dilla bossa nova masterpiece by Azymuth and the main theme of the last Disney Picture focused on Soul and JAzz Music by Jon Batiste.

For his 1H00 mix, Julia has started by a great Library tune from the Trinidadian-American multi instrumentalist George Semper. After some lovely Soul gliddings, including the cover of Donald Byrd « Wind Parade » by Jordan Rakei and the recent re-issue of the Bridge with the track « Stella », Julia has done a powerfull Boogie Jazz Seccion with Incognito, Pleasure and one of my Favorite Tune « Time » by Light of The World.

To Finish this Big Show, I have played the Unreleased Long Version of Gary Bartz Anthem, the well known here « Music is my Sanctuary » and some brand new nuggets like the lasts Kaidi Tatham and Tall Black Guy and a lovely Master Soul Boy.

MY FAVORITE THINGS — Show #32 w/ Julia Weck (Hosted by Psycut)

Another exciting premiere today. Crimi share a fresh sound for our ears with "Chi Ci Talia?" a hot Mediterranean stew of funk, rock and more.

"Chi Ci Talia?" is the latest window into Luci e Guai’s forthcoming eight-song LP. Out on French imprint Arfono this April, an enticing blend of Algerian raï, hard New Orleans funk and Sicilian folk balladry that feels very psychedelic. 

The band’s background and pool of experience is fantastic. Formed in 2018, Crimi finds Julien, a musician with over 20 years experience, collaborating with a brand new trio of players. However it is the singer & sax player’s past ventures that combine to explain how he hit on this sound specifically his work with Mazalda, from Lyon, who evolved from jazzy pop oddballs into a drum-heavy live dance party with their own fifty-speaker travelling soundsystem, the ‘Turbo Clap Station’. 

In recent years, they branched out into raï – first meeting Algerian singer Cheb Lakhdar and backing him in a series of concerts, and later recording an album, El Ndjoum, with Sofiane Saidi, a star of raï’s new electro-wave who’s also featured with Parisian duo Acid Arab. (Mazalda and Sofiane proved their mettle by playing the Algerian city of Oran, raï’s spiritual home, in early 2020.)

Meanwhile, Julien also performed with La Squadra Zeus. Although from the Alpine town of Chambéry they dedicated themselves to the traditional folk styles of southern Italy, nearly 2,000 km away, with Julien playing Sicilian flute and Calabrian bagpipes in the trio. 

Julien learned so much about this music and its relationship to the region’s culture – including, ultimately, the realisation that he wasn’t cut out to play these trad arrangements in straight fashion. Be that as it may, the musician envisaged potential new soundclashes, and the first stirrings of what became Crimi were in his rewirings of three traditional Sicilian songs which appear on the forthcoming album ‘Luci E Guai’.

MIMS is excited to share the online premiere of Shamis & Rebiere's "Rock It For You". This groovy little number aims to capture the growing longing to dance freely,  and somehow finds sweet spot between modern funk, boogie and house. 

The laid back, mid-tempo drums, synth chords and soulful instrumentation, should definitely appeal to Kaytranada fans. But the tight groove is more than complemented by the smooth vocals of Shamis. ‘Let me rock it ’til the lights go out and the sun will rise again' he sings, dreaming of a care-free tomorrow.

The is the first song to be taken from a forthcoming EP to be co-released by Wicked Wax & INI Movement. It's also due to feature remixes by B. Bravo and Fouk, who add a modern funk and bass heavy house take, respectively. Release is due on April 30, on both wax and digital formats. Pre-order on the link above. 

Shamis and Rebiere previously collaborated on “Moonlove”, whilst Shamis dropped ‘Believe’ (featuring Yobe) earlier this year, which was subsequently remixed to great acclaim by bruk godfather IG Culture and his Likwid Continual Space Motion.

THE RAWHOUSE SUPREME — Show #230 (Hosted by The Rawsoul)

MIMS is extremely excited to premiere the punk and funk edged jazz banger that is "Bloom Anubis" by the Dave De Rose led Agile Experiments.

Dave De Rose has spent years self-releasing solo albums while working for the likes of Moloko, Mark Ronson & Mulatu Astatke. In 2016 he inadvertently formed Agile Experiments, a collective made up of like-minded musicians who would gather to play uninterrupted and entirely improvised one hour concerts in unusual spaces.

Recordings of these quickly turned into a string of acclaimed and collectable vinyl releases featuring some of London and Athens' best improvising musicians. Dave's broad listening tastes however, gave the music a groove and space, distinct from much improvised music.

Inspired by the change in circumstance brought about by the pandemic, for the latest Agile Experiments record, Dave recorded himself, drummer & percussionist Giannis Angelopoulos, and saxophonist Josh Arcoleo, on separate improvisation sessions, before adding further instrumentation and electronic production.

"Bloom Anubis" is the first preview into this brand new sound and the title track of the forthcoming Agile Experiments album. A relentless groove hammered by bass and drums, elevated by Josh Arcoleo’s tenor sax.

Exclusive Premiere: Agile Experiments "Bloom Anubis" (Forthcoming on Dave De Rose Records)

“Coral Blossom” is a beautiful 14-minute long dream through dramatic piano chords and electronic arpeggios that ripple like water. Taken from ‘Surface Currents’, the beautiful new ambient album by the sonic explorer, producer, filmmaker and multi-instrumentalist known as Kutiman. 

With ‘Surface Currents’, Kutiman intended to create “music for doing things”, a tool to assist his own visual work. However, his experiments with ambient atmospherics and modular experiments produced a beautiful and calming three-part suite that’s perfect for nothing to as well. The tranquility of Kutiman’s isolated life in the Negev Desert comes through as much as the sense of water. 

Kutiman describes himself as having a “compulsion to create”, and he challenged himself to deliver a range of projects over the course of a year, each tapping into a different vein of his musical world. Soaking up the sounds of classical Indian ragas, Terry Riley and William Basinksi, particularly his ‘Water Music’ album, Kutiman was inspired to create his own take on ambient music, in the process, discovering that making long and slow improvisations with one instrument at a time was just as therapeutic.

Exclusive Premiere: Kutiman "Coral Blossom" (Forthcoming on Siyal Music)

MIMS is excited to share a brand new single from a new band to our ears, Poland-based jazz quartet sneaky jesus, whose bellicose "Battledance"  is taken from 'For Joseph Riddle,  their forthcoming album on a London-based label close to our hearts, Shapes of Rhythm.

The quartet exhibit a fresh sound on the contemporary jazz scene, drawing on Poland's own rich jazz heritage and current output, and at the same time absorbing inspiration from the breakbeat orientated styles of UK and US jazz, and the currents of punk and funk that run through them.

This quartet is formed by Matylda Gerber on tenor and baritone sax, Maciej Forreiter on guitar, Beniamin Łasiewicki on bass with Filip Baczyński on drums. Avoiding trends, they present a raw, sometimes discordant, but at the same groove-laden sound, not afraid of a little skronk.

Nor are they afraid of epic journeys into the realms of free jazz. Closing track "Minneapolis-Police Game-Radar" clocks in at 27 minutes, pushing the album to nearly an hour's length, despite only containing 4 songs.
