Tundra

Grainger was known as an innovator, thus, I wanted to explore multiple ways I could portray Grainger’s instrument (the Metallophone/Glock) but keep true to the original essence of the instrument. This is identified through the samples running in reverse, pushing all the pitches up by and octave digitally and severely lowering the attack of the instrument. I wanted to evoke the listener being on a frozen Tundra, with light snow gently falling around them.

Zing! Glunk! Ping! Gloop! features a sampled instrument made from Grainger’s metallophone, processed with digital effects and used in ways impossible with the original instrument. The title is taken from an article in the Grainger museum reading: ‘Ping, zing, glunk and gobbledygloop ... put these sounds together and it’s music’. I wanted to capture that sentiment using a modern style of music. The narration was additionally sampled from an ABC news piece on Grainger’s free music machines. Finally, several acoustic sounds were recorded to complement the sampled instrument.
