Accompanied by a video that matches the song’s dark and mysterious tone, the song captures all of the paranoia and strangeness of these times. The song was inspired by a late night conversion outside New Street Station, Birmingham with a character who seemed to come straight out of a Tarantino movie.

A 2min 40 trip featuring jangling 12 string, slide guitar, swirling Wurlitzer and rich vocal harmonies, the track’s addictive ‘60s vibe showcases a side to Jack’s musicality that is often overlooked. As he explains, ‘Although I’m mostly known as a performer of blues and roots music, I grew up listening to bands like The Kinks, The Small Faces and The Beach Boys and they’ve always been a huge influence on my writing.’

The lyrics describe a character who is a self proclaimed ‘genius’, struggling with the 7:30 alarm. ’It’s dedicated to everyone who is working from home during these times!’ Blackman quips.
The track is perfectly accompanied by a video created by The Artful Doodler who brings Blackman’s Straight Up Genius character to life.

Jack is fast developing into one the most accomplished and exciting young performers on the roots scene today. He has performed all across the UK and as far as the Mississippi Delta. Having cut his teeth in his teens trading licks and supporting such luminaries as Paul Jones and the Blues Band, Tony Joe White, Dave Swarbrick and being lauded by BBC Radio 2’s ‘Whispering’ Bob Harris, ‘Exceptional guitarist, this sounds great!’, acoustic guitar legend Martin Simpson, ‘At last! A brilliant young guitarist coming through’ and American bluesman Charlie Parr, ‘Just keeps getting better and better…it’s kinda scary’.

‘Straight Up Genius’ was written by Jack Blackman and in addition to his vocals, guitars, banjo and percussion features Adam Barry on keyboards, James Maguire on bass and backing vocals and David Vaughan on drums. It was mixed by Joe Collier.
