Ancestral Voices 'Night Of Visions Remixed Part 2' | NOVREMIX02 | Samurai Horo 

Liam Blackburn's transformative 'Night Of Visions' LP as Ancestral Voices forged a bold new sonic identity for an influential figure on the electronic music scene. From his groundbreaking work as Indigo and onto the success of Akkord's hybrid electronic melting pot (with Synkro), the quest for forward movement is intrinsic to everything Liam produces. To further celebrate the 'Night Of Visions' LP release, we asked some of our favourite producers to reconstruct highlights from 'Night Of Visions'  in their own style.

Each remixer chose their own track from 'Night Of Visions' to work with. Samuel Kerridge requested to use parts of 2 different tunes and marry them in one remix. Elements from 'Sleepless Night, First Light' and 'Ritual Terre' are dissected, reversed and used as haunting ghost like layers that coil themselves around an assortment of off kilter drum hits, guttural murmurs and sound effects that often feel like they are designed to test the flexibility of your speaker cones.

Ancestral Voices - Sleepless Ritual (Samuel Kerridge Remix)· Samurai Horo

The ninth show in the Cyrk series ‘Pattern Compulsions’ curated for Resonance 104.4FM, is an exclusive mix by multidisciplinary artist Mark Fell.
Mark is a multidisciplinary artist based in Sheffield (UK). After studying experimental film and video art at the local polytechnic he reverted to earlier interests in computational technology, music and synthetic sound. In 1998 he initiated a series of critically acclaimed releases, featuring both collaborative and solo works, on labels including Mille Plateaux, Line, Editions Mego, Raster Noton and Alku.

Although working in electronic and techno music traditions, Mark’s practice has become increasingly informed by non-European musics. This is evident in two recent linked works “Multistablity” and “UL8” which explore a number of unfamiliar timing and tuning systems. Uncut magazine called these “completely mind-blowing” and the Wire said these were “amazing”.

As well as recorded works Mark also produces installation pieces often using multispatial speaker technologies. His work in this area is characterized by ‘non illusion based’ approaches to surround sound environments. This methodology became prominent in a work commissioned by Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary (Vienna) in collaboration with Roc Jiménez de Cisneros in 2008. For this the two artists developed a 48 speaker piece that rejected complex three dimensional panning systems in favour of spatially static synthetic sound. Critically Mark’s work is informed by Western philosophy, especially the writings of Heidegger and Wittgenstein.

Pattern Compulsions #9 – Mark Fell

A trail of breadcrumbs only the breadcrumbs are little pieces of human excrement and if one were to follow the trail at the end one might find something in the shape of a man but lacking any defining features except a single orifice from which filth continues to flow and without any senses to guide itself the trail simple meanders over the landscape until every inch of land is covered in shit and the beast continues to wade and then swim through it until the creatures own sea of waste begins to dissolve the flesh that birthed it and eventually erodes it's bones to soiled dust. Happy happy joy joy.
