afterglow

Last weekend my girlfriend and I flew all the way to Berlin only to be told "Nicht Willkommen" at the door of Berghain. I guess we just weren't Techno enough. As a consolation I decided to record my idea of a good night out, a selection of the finest banging techno and acid, old and new. Some of the mixing is a bit rough and the flow might not be that smooth in places but this is very much a "don't give a fuck" mix, and it gets pretty relentless towards the end. If anyone wants to pass it on to Sven the Berghain doorman, be my guest.

Deeper Shades Of Hooj Volume Two - CD1 - (1998)

I regularly listen to the Global Underground and NuBreed compilation series and thought about putting together a kind of NuBreed tribute mix, however, the style of each DJ and CD is quite unique and creating a flow proved difficult. So in the end I cut a lot of tracks and went with the 15 below, which includes some tracks Nick Warren played in his GU compilations, the rest are from the NuBreed series. On the flipside, there’s reinterpretations of Hurricane from two very promising young acts championed by Souvenir. Re.You has had an incredible year, his live with Rampa travelling all over, and hits on Gigolo, Mobilee and Souvenir to name but a few. Here he toughens up the skittering shakers, techy drums patterns driving it all forward. A robotic squelch heralds in the vocal with a magic phaser ray liberally applied to the instrumentation, turning the weirdness dial up to 11.

There is little dispute that the 90s was the most influential decade for electronic music. An explosion of variety, originality and creativity, from acid house, to rave, tech trance, hardcore, drum'n'bass, techno, jungle, progressive house, and so much more.

Most of the progressive house tunes that stood out at the time still sound fresh today. I put together this mix in 2012, tunes from that era, some larger and more well known than others, but all still sound brilliant these decades later.
