Fragmentation and Union on the Search for Utopia


It is not Utopia that we strive for. It is not reaching a “destination”, as Utopia is no place. It is the search for Utopia. Upon the water, the boat floats. We are in charge of the sails, and we decide which direction we move toward. On this journey, no one said it would be easy. Choppy waters and going forward into the unknown darkness of night. Yet, the stars shine, as does the moon. And from above, there is light. And when hours pass and the sunlight breaks, it simply illuminates. Simultaneously this light casts shadows on the placid watery plane. We need both on this search ~ both night and day. Symbiosis leads to quantum leaps. On this search for no place, memories arise, and with them we move ahead in awareness. Memories fragmented and fractal, morphing and merging and changing with the tides. They gather along the way into a collection of dark and shiny pieces of us. Some we choose to keep. Some we choose to free. We honor them all, for without them we would not be here, right now. On the boat. On this search. Shaping new memories as we float. The Utopian heartbeat thumps to the rhythm of just one sound. Do you hear it? Love is calling.

Comprised of Laura Lee, Mark Speer and Donald Johnson, the trio have supported Bonobo across his USA tour and even had a track included in his Late Night Tales mix last year.LNT's artist label Night Time Stories subsequently signed them up, with single 'A Calf Born In Winter' released 19th May and an album in the works. Providing the soundtrack to your dreams and entering i-D's mid-week wind down session for their first ever mix, these are the psychedelic sounds of Khruangbin. Drift off.

In this we pull on Acid Jazz, Gospel, Brazilian Funk and Psych, Thai & Japanese Pop/Rock, "farm rock", Dub, Funk, and R&B to hopefully create a mix that is varied in style yet cohesive in feel. @Ami-Dang is a South Asian-American vocalist, sitarist and producer living in Baltimore. Her work fuses ambient, trance and electronic music with instruments from her native India. For her new album, Parted Plains -- a stunning instrumental sitar record -- Ami took inspiration from both South Asian and Middle Eastern folktales and the Western interpretations of them; resulting in not a culture clash, but a beautiful project that sits somewhere in between. Fully impressed, we asked her to make us a mix.
 
“I put together a combination of ambient, experimental and noisy electro tracks from artists from Baltimore, India, and a couple from artists (from elsewhere) working with electronics and South Asian instruments and sounds, like sitar and harmonium,” she says of the mix. “It kicks off with some poetry from Ellen Klowden over a serene jam: the recording of her voice is the exact one she sent to me via an Instagram message after she did some energy work, like Reiki, on me in the Owen Rose Garden after sunset on the Willamette River in Eugene, Oregon. Her poem “Aura Dancing" is the perfect way to enter the zone of this mix.”
