Our latest mixtape comes from Hora Lunga, a composer, sound designer, and songwriter based in Zurich. With a passion for pushing the boundaries of electronic music, Hora Lunga creates a unique blend of traditional and experimental sounds that take listeners on a soulful journey.

Having studied electroacoustic composition, the artist's practice focuses on extended instrumental techniques and improvisation. However, his versatile profile has taken him from pop music productions to experimental works and sound art in recent years. David, as Hora Lunga is also known, co-runs the Swiss experimental music label BlauBlau Records, which is also an artist collective.

Hora Lunga's latest release, Wirren (BlauBlau, 2022), is the product of a collaborative artist residency at Dampfzentrale Berne & Südpol Lucerne, and was premiered at Gessnerallee Zurich. Otherworldly drones and chamber music, feverish free jazz, and serene soundscapes provided by a vast ensemble make it an ode to shared improvisational sessions.

'WIRREN' is passionately described as chamber music for anarchists and social media addicts, sleepwalkers and day thieves, social romantics, and post-structuralists; for those who are drowning in everyday life, for the superstitious and control-obsessed, for everyone who can read a map and for everyone who can't read a map. The music reflects this, with each track taking the listener on a journey through a range of moods, from introspective and contemplative to more joyous territories. Hora Lunga weaves together a tapestry of sound that speaks deeply.

In this mix, Hora Lunga draws inspiration from their latest album, infusing it with their signature style of weaving together a diverse palette of sounds. With acute attention to detail, Hora Lunga creates a sonic landscape that explores the depths of emotion and expression.

As you well know, electronic music is so amazing because it is capable of merging with any musical style. Apart from this, you are not subject to particular instruments, so it is not very complicated to evolve and open new paths. Among all the musical fusions and derivations that we have been able to hear in all these years there has always been one (I don't know if I should call it a genre) for which I have had a special weakness, Braindance. Anyone who is influenced by more acidic sounds, syncopated bass, funk drums and nostalgic pads will be deliciously grateful for this new album from FLUCTUOSA _ VODOR L ZECK. In my opinion they are masters in this style. While Fluctuosa honors a very original and refined composition that becomes addictive, Vodor makes use of the iconic 808/606/303 combo to develop delicious funky (sometimes Jazzy) tracks that transport us to the golden era of electronic music

Here we have 80 amazing minutes that we hope you all enjoy.
Remember that when everything turns gray and boring, Braindance has always saved the day.

'Almost everything that happens in Jack Sheen’s piece is there in its first few bars. Rather like an Alexander Calder mobile, in which there is no foreground or background, and in which every element is equal to every other, Lung has been written without narrative or dramatic incident, in the usual sense of the terms, but as an object to be slowly considered from every angle.
 
But this is not to say that everything that happens can be heard in those first few bars. Sheen’s piece may be flat in one sense, but – again like Calder’s mobiles – it also has great depth of field, with layers of music rolling over each other to bring different elements in and out of view. Sheen divides his orchestra into independent groups that cross the traditional family barriers. So harp and alto flute pair up to play imaginary folktunes; piano, flute, clarinet and trumpets sound slowly changing arpeggios; and horns, violas and double basses sustain a harmonic bed. Most distinctive of all is a heavily muted trio made up of the leaders of the 1st violins, violas, and cellos. Apart from four cues from the conductor, indicating points where they should start and stop, they act entirely independently of the rest of the orchestra, cycling through their own collection of melodic loops.
 
The title refers first of all to the slow expansion and contraction of breath, but it might also suggest the self-similar division of the airways into smaller and smaller paths, each division reflecting the structure of the whole. Or, again, a labyrinthine organism, alive through constant motion.

Study no.1 is guided by the principle of symmetry. The central spot of the composition is in the middle of the room - half the way on both horizontal X- and Z-axis. Each object always moves through both halves of at least one of the X- or Z-planes. The element which is being doubled, is followed by the same-pace movement of the element on the opposite side of the axis, but the movement is being reversed: element no.6 positioned on Z-4 goes from X-5 to X+5 while at the same time in the same speed element no.7 at Z+4 goes from X+5 to X-5. 
There are three elements which are the musical nucleus of the composition (1, 2, 3). These sounds are airy (noisy) but they have a recognisable pitch and form a minor triad. All other elements are tuned to these three elements which define the tonal center of the piece. This kind of interpretation of the harmonic aspect of the composition, parallels the interpretation of ‘symmetrical’ in spatial domain.
