Arlo Quilley and I got together recently to record some tunes on fiddle and piano. I had a mandolin at hand, and he suggested we record this march together.

Let us know if you know the name of it - I'd never heard the tune before, and Arlo can't remember the name. It may be a composition of John McSherry, but even this is not certain. If you recognize it, or have any hunches or insights, do let us know!

STC Improvisation III

Jamming with my cousin Zack Weidner at the annual Maggetti family Christmas reunion, and in the interests of gauging our musical development, we decided to try to recreate last year's Dark Star Jam (which can be found elsewhere on this channel). I've played a lot of Freddie Hubbard's Little Sunflower over the years - I learned it while studying piano with Jason White, and my interpretations are modelled largely after his arrangement. Going through all the different versions I've recorded over the past few years, I rediscovered this first instance of the song in my archive. Though my timekeeping and accuracy have improved since I first began recording Little Sunflower, my later renditions haven't come close to matching the creativity and energy of this take. Improvisation with Phil Van Eck

While exploring the University of Waterloo campus looking for interesting places to create music, we came across this stairwell in the Earth Sciences building. The ten of us spaced ourselves out through the stairwell and improvised this piece. We had two microphones set up - a Zoom Q2HD at the bottom of the stairs and a Samsung Galaxy S6 at the top - roughly 50 feet apart. I mixed the two recordings together to create this track: the audio from the bottom can be heard in the left channel, and in the right channel is the audio from the top. We hope you enjoy the results!
