I drove to Connecticut to record with Lys on a beautiful Sunday , road trips are fun for me , especially when you get to play music & eat some of Lys’s homemade bread & stew.

Lys had given me a whole playlist of songs to choose from, but I heard Holy Ghost from Low & fell in love.

Day 11 of 12 Covers for Christmas is another close friend, the incredible Heather Rose .
She’s been the front woman over half her life, forming The Stereobirds /later called The Mockingbirds as a teen & winning all kinds of awards when I was just starting out! Late as usual ;)

Heather believed in me & connected me with Myles Baer, both without whom I’d probably still be playing songs alone in my bedroom that only my cats would hear ❤️

Heather learned painful new chords for this tune , I’m very grateful to her for so much , but also doing all the heavy lifting learning this song!
Heather Rose in Clover is her current band, with her wife on bass she is living the dream ❤️

The Cherry Tree Carol , requested by my good friend & patron member Jacob H is number 9 of my 12 Covers for Christmas.

I learned this song by listening to Shirley Collins's version, but my friends Arborea also did a very nice moody version , worth checking out.

I will be singing this song live online this Saturday at my friend Jacob's holiday twitch live stream, and there's a very good chance I will ugly cry because this song really destroys me  ❤️❤️ it took me several times to get through it for this version!

The Highway Man ( Over the Garden Wall)

This was written and recorded in 2005 for the Interrobang Cartel online musical collaborative, and remastered in 2015 by Machines with Magnets. It is one of a vanishingly small number of attempts at a spoken word song and was vaguely inspired by the Brooklyn Funk Essentials. It is, naturally, recorded in the key of B flat. 

There's also a radio safe version of this song called 'Swat The Bees' which will be on my album 'Cabin Fever', which should be out in a couple of weeks.

Recording this taught me that, given the opportunity, I will pretty much want to always use a cowbell in a song, so I pretty much gave up using that instrument after that, for my own good.

I think the whistled solo is pretty good.

F*** The Bees

This song is from the 'Love YA Like Crazy' podcast, which is hosted by Carrie and Jake. Carrie wrote the lyrics, Jake set them to music and recorded them. It's a song about truffles inspired by one of the characters in Maggie Stiefvater's book 'Shiver', a werewolf named Sam who is a songwriter.
