I recorded metal, glass and plastic discs spolling around a glass table, then manipulated these sounds considerably using various DAW's.

This work is inspired by late American author Ray Bradbury’s ‘The Long Rain’, one of eighteen science fiction short stories which make up his seminal collection The Illustrated Man. The story tells of four men who have crash landed on Venus and are travelling through its vast jungles and perpetual rain in search of large shelters known as Sun Domes. One by one, the men are driven insane by the endless rain, winds, thunder and lightning, and their hope to find shelter and safety fades. In this work by the same title, performers explore a variety of performance techniques to evoke sounds of rain, thunder and scorched earth, and of marching, breathing and unanswered questions.

The Long Rain (for large ensemble)

This piece was Jake Randell’s first exploration of how decoupled organ pipes could be repurposed to create new music. He recorded a large collection of organ pipes individually inside a Wesleyan chapel in Whitby, North Yorkshire, exploring the sonic capabilities of each type of pipe (bourdon, principal rank, reeded and others) using a variety of performance techniques. These recordings were then used as sound materials for An Introduction to…, where a sense of a virtual “acoustic” performance—the pipes distributed across an ensemble of players surrounding the audience—was created by arranging the recordings in time and space while avoiding any other sonic manipulation.

An Introduction to the Organ Pipe Ensemble
