The Most Important Word - Audio Podcast

People ask me all the time, "How do I get covered in the New York Times, or how do I get that meeting with that CEO?" My response? 1 is greater than 0. 

What I mean by this is that people underestimate the steps it takes to get to the biggest places in the world. It just doesn't happen over night. You've got to put in the work and you've got to continuously provide value to whomever you're trying to reach, be it an audience of a million, or an audience of 1. 

If you want to get the prominent news coverage or that high-profile meeting with today's luminaries, you need to do a lot of the little things to build up your cadence to actually get those opportunities. Because people have seen me on shows like Ellen, or Conan, The Today Show, or CNN, they often ask how they could get those opportunities for themselves, and the hard truth of it all is that you've got to earn it. You've got to put in the time to get asked to get that coverage. Before I was ever covered by any of these big names, I was doing interviews and appearances on shows that only received 1, or 19 or 137 views. But why? Why would I do that? Because those few views, that extra one view, is so much greater than none at all.

So, are you willing to take ten minutes to get 150 views? Because I am. It's not always about the width or the size of the platform. It's about the value you're providing to the people who took the time out of their lives to listen to you. Whether that's a group of ten or one hundred, or one million - It's all the same. And the value you set out to provide each time should remain as such. 

So my advice is to put in the work and do all of the little things that you don't want to do. Nothing is going to come easy so stop looking for that one golden moment. Work on expanding your reach and building your network through the value you can provide, regardless of the "reach" or the audience that may be present. Intent trumps all. And if you stick with that notion, there may just be that one person in that crowd of 5, 10, 15 people who can drastically change the course of your journey.

What would you say is the the biggest obstacle to your success right now? A lack of time? Maybe a lack of capital? Or maybe a lack of good employees?

Nope. All wrong.

The biggest obstacle to success is a lack of optimism.

I’ll back up.

The fact that people go straight to any other answer is the problem in itself. Money and time are, of course, difficulties. When I started WineLibrary, I had time but we didn’t necessarily have the money. So it took more time. Today, I have the money, but boy do I not have the time. Fact is, though, that neither should ever be an excuse. They weren’t for me, and they shouldn’t be for you.

This is something I really need everyone to understand. No one should ever point to time or money as an obstacle. They are firmly in the excuses column, and I have no patience for that. I will never make an excuse. Everything that is a problem with me, everything I don’t achieve and everything wrong with VaynerMedia is my fault. I succumb to that, I respect that, and that’s how I think it should be. No excuses. Even more so, you shouldn’t let yourself have patience for excuses either. Train yourself to believe this, and you will see amazing results. No joke. There will always be problems, and you need to get out of the mindset that they are obstacles because you should already assume they will be there. They’re just part of the path, my friend.

Because guess what? There are about a million other things that could stop success in it’s tracks. The health and well being of your family. The world is changing. The media, bad coverage of you. I’m a human being, and I always wonder what would happen if I say the wrong thing. Any of these things could happen, but they are the same thing: excuses.

There are a million reasons why not, but there is one good reason why, which is this: you just have to persevere.
No matter what happens, it’s the way it is, and you have to keep going. And that is where the optimism lives. If you truly believe that you can do it no matter what, you’ve got this. The only reason you might bring up any of the previous excuses we talked about is because you DON’T believe, right? Do not let that kind of thinking ever get in the way.

So. You can pick time. You can pick money. Pick any one or two things that you think stop you from winning your game. But the truth is there are a million reasons. Get thicker skin. Build up your self esteem. To be able to get through, you need to have optimism. Every day is hard, and all you have to fight it in the end is yourself.

The Straightest Road To Success

There is something that is rarely talked about in the business world and I want to start building more attention for it.

That thing is self-awareness.

I’m upset that the narrative these days is that everyone needs to be number one, own a company, be in charge. A lot of people are going to lose that way.

Self-awareness allows people to recognize what things they do best so they can then go hard on those aspects of their life. It also helps you accept your weaknesses.

What works for one person doesn’t work for everyone. I want people to learn to be at peace with themselves, to understand what they can offer, because everyone’s got something. The key, however, is learning how to find it.

Self-awareness can help you do that.

Self-awareness is being able to accept your weaknesses while focusing all of your attention on your strengths.

The moment you decide to accept your shortcomings and bet entirely on your strengths, things will change. Trust me.

Many things I say are contradictions. I like pulling from both directions because it brings strengths. I really do think that life and business are bridges, and if you pull hard in both directions, you'll find balance. For example, ego and humility. You need both, but you can't have to much of one. Same with clouds and dirt, aka, higher level and execution. 

So when I say don't pay attention to small details, but I also say play to your strengths but your strength is attention to detail, I understand it can be hard to figure out what to do. But I have an idea. If your strength is attention to detail but you're looking for long term business success, there are some things you need to consider.

First, if you're top dog, your business is going to be small. But you would be an awesome number two three or four to a top dog. You need to pair yourself with someone who only thinks about the clouds and isn't down in the dirt like you are. You might even be happier not having the pressure of being number one because it will allow you to pay attention to those small details you would not normally be able to. Attach yourself to a number one and bet on your strengths.

If your strength is finite details, your upside is limited as the number one. You have two decisions to make. One, you're cool with that. Or two, you're going to latch on to someone who will be able to elevate your work and your eight or twenty percent will be greater than the a hundred percent you do for yourself.

One of the most important things for me when it comes to running a team is making everyone feel safe. Because when people feel safe, they start telling the truth. And that is an enormous upside in running a business. If everyone can be honest with themselves, be truthful about who they actually are versus who they want to be, that is when the magic happens.
