1) Tell us a bit about yourself and your record collection.

I began DJ-ing at the age of 15 in SW London, back in 1986. I had a large group of friends, we all did graffiti and we were all into Hip Hop and old funky tunes so there was always something interesting happening. By '88 I was starting to get regular DJ gigs, and I began making my own music in the mid-90's using a sample kit for my Commodore Amiga and a 4-track cassette player, along with extra scratching on the decks. Just after I graduated from Uni I signed to Ultimate Dilemma Recordings and started putting out singles, remixing and collaborating with other artists. By 1999 my first album came out; I had a band which toured europe playing my tunes live, with me on percussion and turntables. I left UD in 2001, and went to live in Ibiza as a resident DJ for Manumission and Space. In 2002 I put out my 2nd LP on Illicit Records, did a few more singles and remixes, then I kinda retired for a few years. I would still continue to DJ regularly. In the late 2000's I teamed up with another good friend and we started this comedy MC-ing thing called "Beeny Royston and Jadell", we ended up playing lots of festivals, Notting Hill Carnival and various other places. Fake Blood and I hooked up to produce 2 excellent MC's from New York called "BRONX SLANG" in 2019. We made an album which was a critical success, then a mixtape, then a second album in 2021. After that I have retired again from music for a little bit. I am still playing drums, buying yet more records and DJing at home though. That will never end.

2) 45/7 is all about celebrating the 7". Can you tell us a bit about what you love about the format.

I have always had a love for 7"s since I was little. My first ever memories are sitting on a pile of my parents' singles and sort of swatting them around the room, then my mum coming in and laughing.  Most of my pocket money went on buying 7"s all the way through until Hip Hop came around, then I went for the albums. The gritty determination to find unknown beats and solid grooves drove me back towards the 7-inches in the late 80's, and that has never let up. I just had to answer the front door, and it was the postman delivering me a 7-inch of "Cosmic Sea" by Mystic Moods that I'd just ordered from Germany. So there!

3) One hour of vinyl goodness... can you talk us through your selection for your 45/7 mix?

For this mix, I chose some of my all-time favourites, and also some new discoveries of recent years. Some of it is dancy, some of it is funky, some psychedelic, some sweet soul, some old pop, lots of NICE DRUMS. All of it is GOOD music. I quite liked the fact that this wasn't a mix with a dancefloor in mind, as I could choose some tunes I wouldn't really get a chance to play outside of my house. Owing to my past DJ memory muscle, I seem to have grouped styles together a little bit. DJ-ing is all about taking people with you on your personal journey of taste, I feel. I've hardly ever played what people call a "compromising" set. The few times I've had to do it (for example at weddings!) it's been one of the most depressing experiences ever.

4) Where can people catch you / listen to your music? 

Most of my JADELL stuff is on Spotify / Apple Music, lots of my remixes and the "Beeny Royston and Jadell" stuff is on YouTube. The BRONX SLANG is on all digital formats, and there is a vinyl of the first LP, well worth a check.

These aren't in order because I don't want to put anything on that number one pedestal. These are 7-inch singles that I own:

A bootleg remix of Marvin Gaye’s classic “What’s Going On“ by Andy Caldwell.

Following the results of the 2016 US Presidential Election, who would have guessed, on the 45th anniversary of Marvin Gaye’s seminal 1971 album What’s Going On, that the title song would be more poignant than ever.

Simply nudging the tempo, refashioning the original bass line, adding some melodic pads and piano lines, Caldwell has created a simple update of this classic song, all in the key of C Sharp Minor.
