Jaeho Hwang is releasing his second EP, Inner-self, on Chinabot. Combining elements of gabber, industrial rythms components and experimental music gleaned from ten years in London's electronic music scene, Hwang also uses traditional Korean instrumentation as part of his compelling, original voice. 

The literal and spiritual follow-up to his 2019 EP Non-self, Inner-self examines contemporary life through a Buddhist lens. But where Non-self took delight in the glitchy, dissolution of the self in a digital landscape or on the dance floor of a club, Inner-self looks back towards Korea's past, exploring the echoes of past people and cultures in Seoul's modern landscape.

Purpose Of Purposeless Beat - Jaeho Hwang

‘Non-self 비자아’ is the first EP from London-based, South Korean musician and visual artist Jaeho Hwang. The six-track EP explores his sense of identity in the digital age as refracted through the Buddhist concept of anatta, or non-self—the belief that there is no unchanging, permanent soul or essence in living beings. Inspired by the Buddhist concept of impermanent selfhood, the EP combines dark, industrial club beats with traditional Korean instruments and samples

Jaeho Hwang draws from the dark, stuttering beats from London’s experimental club scene—harsh industrial sounds recall no-wave’s minimalist deconstruction. His use of traditional Korean instruments within this context, like the piri bamboo flute, or the stringed kayagum, recast traditional textures into modern form. On Sad Relationship, Jaeho samples the famous 80s South Korean pop ballad of the same name. The song glitches like a memory, warped and torn by an electronic tumult, and haunted by the original’s sentimental melody.

If you know what KF94 means, you must be a South Korean either someone who knows very well about Korean culture. KF94 is one type of high standard face mask that was made and proved by the ministry of health under South Korean government for Korean people to wears to protect themselves from air pollution since 2008.

KF94 mask is equivalent to N95 mask but specially designed for air pollution. During the Coronavirus pandemic, western people consider to put on a face mask only if they are sick. It’s because mainly The World Health Organization doesn’t broadly recommend that healthy individuals wear face masks. Only those treating Covid-19 patients, or those sneezing or coughing, need to do so. However, It’s a very common sense to put on a face mask in public for everyone’s safety in East Asia because potentially you could be a spreader before you notice that you are sick and you have any symptoms of the Coronavirus. I never imagined wearing a face mask would be a daily life routine but it has been in South Korea and East Asia since early 2000 due to air pollution, SARS and the Coronavirus lately. My niece(8years old) and nephew(6years old) are growing up with wearing a face mask since they were born very sadly. We will go through this Coronavirus virus pandemic and we have to take it as a very serious alert rather than as a one-off thing and every government will have to take actions proactively to protect our generation but also the next generation. Otherwise, we will reach into the stage where we might lose everything that we take it for granted in a short period of time. We live in 2020 at this condition, we will have to change otherwise what will happen in 2040….?

Home Fitness Vol. 2, a collaboration between DCYY/到此一游 and BULLY magazine, is guided by three ideas: 

1. During this difficult time giving our artist contributors the choice of either donating their portion of the compilation sales to a charity of their choice or using the money for their own needs. 
2. Bringing together artists from around the world to encourage global connectedness and empathy through club music. 
3. Repaying the kindness for Wuhan that we experienced from so many different places via Home Fitness Vol. 1. 

The Home Fitness compilation series was inspired by home workouts during COVID-19, now we’re back again to guide you through a wholesome exercise with a warm-up, work-out and cool down. 

But while Vol. 2 begun as a compilation focused on COVID-19 relief, we’ve recently morphed into a compilation that will also support more diverse charities. Specifically, with the drive to support the Black Lives Matter movement since the murder of George Floyd and beyond, many of our artists have selected charities directly related to this revolutionary movement. This includes the organising team of DCYY/到此一游 and BULLY, who will contribute 25% of all compilation sales directly to the charity Movement for Black Lives (M4BL). The remaining 75% will be split equally between our artists, with chosen charities including:
