I wrote this song while sitting along a rocky coastal shoreline, looking to the earth for help and comfort-- as if it was a wise old man. I've always felt closest to God in the natural world, where I am forced to stop, slow down, and be reminded to take pleasure in existence itself. It is a pleasure... simple, ancient and so true. The world is so very often a difficult place to be. Throughout my life, I've faced many disappointments, failures, and hurts, but I've also come to more fully believe that the only way I've been able to cope with pain is to embrace the world as it is, knowing that the final satisfaction will come beyond this place here. 

As I get older, I find myself more often subconsciously personifying earth... You catch the earth's beautiful face "smiling" and "laughing" through a sunset or through some autumn leaves. The sun stretches itself out across a field or rocks along the coast. You hear the laughter of the waves more loudly than that of the kids on the sand. The earth seems to delight in simply being. Calmly and with a sort of cheer, the earth embraces existence and encourages me to do the same... to accept, appreciate and enjoy the world for what it is. What this earth personified has taught me, is that life on earth means facing the trial of existence and finding beauty in its struggle. As Bootsy Collins once said, "The secret to walkin´ on water is knowing where the rocks are.”

Still Flowers Growin'

This is a song I'm SUPER proud of in so many ways. This labor of love started out of a tiny room in Nashville where I played my Nashville Producer, Aaron Hayes, a new song I had recently written. Fast forward a month later, we found ourselves in a world famous Los Angeles recording studio (Guns N’ Roses, No Doubt, Black Sabbath, Van Morrison, etc) where I had some of my musician friends from Nashville come in to lay down acoustic & electric guitars (heck even Nashville Strung guitar), live drums, keys and even a vintage B3 Hammond organ. Spending a few days of studio time at this world renowned music studio was unforgettable and my friend and amazing sound engineer (Steve) provided us access to so many amazing vintage microphones and instruments. We recorded my lead vocals for this song on a vintage TELEFUNKEN C12 with the original brass capsule. {{It's not often you get to record vocals on a microphone worth tens of thousands of dollars.)) We also had a blast laying down multiple different types of uncommon guitars (Fender Thinline Telecaster, Gretsch Country Gentleman, Rickenbacker 360/12, PRS Baritone, and more) for different parts of the song and incorporated a beautiful antique vintage Hammond B3 Organ as well.

Listening to the final mix, I was reminded of the wide array of individuals who contributed to this track-- from an amazing producer who helped me realize my vision, the wonderful Nashville musicians who laid down their beautiful talents for this song, and even a talented Nashville singer who laid down beautiful BGVs. Grateful to all the individuals who contributed to making this song with the utmost excellence. I hope you love it as much as I do.

I met a young kid named Jordy a while back while ballin’ 🏀 and eventually got to talking and found out he quietly dropped his first album last year that he made out of his bedroom. I was impressed and sent him a song I’ve been sitting on for a while. While most wouldn’t imagine a millennial with a love for 90s R&B to collaborate with a Gen-Z Christian trap rap artist, I invited him into the studio and we quickly knocked this song... right out of the park! Since then it’s been such an honor mentoring him not just about music but about life and how to love God the most above all other things. Hope you enjoy it!

Cool story involved... I was teaching a class in Portland this summer at the time, and didn't have access to a studio, so I used a closet in one of the classrooms, hung up some blankets, borrowed a decent mic and decided to record the vocals in it and sent the recordings over to Tim.

This upbeat love song is centered around one of my life mantras. Whether platonically or romantically, I feel that it is important to strive to leave someone you meet in a better place than you found them. Fun fact: The working title for this song was “Better Than I Found.” It was a fun songwriting exercise to incorporate visual imagery into the lyrics.

In my own words: 

By intentionally melding rich layers of sound, this track refocuses on the hope found in the multi-dimensional element of love. Vulnerability creates a fertile soil in which deeper relationships can take root. This authentic environment is vital to loving someone but cultivating this climate requires us to embrace our fear. It’s okay to acknowledge that we are imperfect, so long as we trust the process that results from being vulnerable. By committing to love, we come to find that we don’t love someone in spite of their imperfections, but because of them. The track is comprised of hundreds of layers of live instrumentation and voices including a full orchestra, instruments, claps, snaps, and vocal harmonies.

Atmosphere

In my own words: 

On the surface, this playful and vivid assortment of sounds presents a breeze of casualness. However, nestled underneath is a collection of deeper philosophical thoughts on existence and our unending quest for belonging. The song animates the question, “is what you’re running after what you already have?”

In My Own Words: 

With this song, I wanted to touch upon the disconnect that exists even in a “more connected world.” Much like an old Peter, Paul, & Mary folk song, I wanted to focus the musicality around tight harmonies building up to a harmonious bridge of sound that transported your head above clouds. The title takes a shot at Facebook (and online presence in general) while presenting the fickle ways in which we cultivate community and relationships.
