Program Note:
This piece was performed for its memorial of the centennial year of the March First Independence Movement in Korea. Lyrics come from poet Dong Ju Yun's work "The Cross". The title captures both the pronunciation of "the cross", and the tragic fact which the poet "could not cross" the sea and come back to his motherland from the Japanese concentration camp until the very last day he died in 1945.

염원 Longing (ensemble, 2019)

"Oscillation occurs naturally, abruptly and resonately. 

I intend to demonstrate certain forms of Oscillations. It could be the train whistle declaring departure or the siren roaring past. It could be the ring tone that will never be answered, the memory that cannot be reproduced. Possibly, it could be the clash as it falls inward or the groan as it spreads widely.

In this piece, Oscillation is the vibration of individual instruments and groups of instruments; it is a big crescendo. It need not be embellished, as, when it comes, it is only Oscillation which exists."
