PH17, the Leipzig-based label by Solaris and Stanley Schmidt returns back to business with an EP by Leipzig’s very own DJ YumYum. Mostly known for his releases on Defrostatica and his activism in the local Rave-scene, “Decisions” marks his first full-length release setting a high standard defining his own sound somewhere between „Artefaxian“-ultra-HD glitches and the highly energetic rave sound known by artists like Schacke et al. The release appears physically as a rarely limited M-Disc, an online-piece and graphic design by Anja Kaiser.

The name of the EP describes the creative process leading to this music: Drawing from a sufficient sound pallet and technique, all left to be done is taking aesthetic decisions.

In these times of desillusion – besides the quest for overcoming capitalism – sound can achieve a certain autonomy, where something like a meaning can be preserved, at least partly being able to escape the determination of the destructive social forces determining us. In Electronic music there can be the anticipation of the use of the forces of production, modern technology, for the human benefit, not its self-destruction. This piece of music would like to be a contribution to this.

About the Artist:

DJ YumYum is an electronic musician from Leipzig. Besides cheap instant food and the world revolution he is mostly interested in modern, ravey, fast and experimental electronic sounds which he produces, digs and tries to spread within the Electronic music community. Having a background in Jazz music, he tries to push complex yet physical music to an effort reminding of the radical roots of Rave.

Taking hints from old school reggaeton pioneers like dj Blass or dj Negro, the french producer and dj gives us his version of a future facing reggaeton, El Sonido De La Nueva Generación .

The white side is an action packed, bass heavy reggaeton hybrid, mixing classic dembow rhythms with glitchy modular synths for a hectic ride .

On the black side, dj’s can find a vinyl exclusive drum tool, ideal for quickly adding some reggaeton drums to any track in their mix.

‘To Illustrate' is a new collaborative album co-produced by a group of artists from the extended @wisdomteeth-uk family, spotlighting a scattered scene of producers making forward-thinking electronic music of various hues around the 100 BPM mark.

Seoul's @8salamanda8 contributes low-slung, tripped-out takes on ambient and downtempo with 'κρήνη της νύμφης', finding close sonic counterparts in UK producers Iglew and Glances.

The Naked King is the final chapter in my « King Of Blends » trilogy of mix tapes (the previous instalments are 2016’s 100% RADIO HITS and 2017’s Impressions). I wanted to explore once again the world of blends and giving iconic pop pieces as well as classic underground tunes a new context by layering them with more modern and/or obscure tracks. I wanted it to be about finding beauty in anachronisms and considering time not as a line but as a dot where Squarepusher, Lil Flip, Rod Lee, Lorenzo Senni and Finn’s music are happening simultaneously. I wanted to go against the rules of progression in DJ sets, while maintaining a fluidity that resists tempo and key changes. It is a stream of consciousness that ends up being more informed by the construction of a Lil Wayne verse than the typical temporality of your conservative DJ’s latest techno mix. Every track builds on the flow of the previous one played, but then i realized it went from a jungle track to a Houston rap acapella to a grime beat to an accelerated Miami club track to MF Doom, and i thought it was fine, because it’s all the same music to me and it all makes perfect sense. Lots of tracks are played at the wrong speed, things slow down and accelerate again, and the ride itself, no matter how chaotic, becomes the message. In the year when every one is acting surprised that t’s acceptable again for DJs to « play anything », i wanted to show the world what « play anything » truly means.
