Dramatic Fragment for Soprano, Cello and Violin.

Originally conceived as a smaller section of a large dramatic work, this piece took on its own life to the extent where for me it seemed best as a stand-alone untitled fragment.

The nonsense language of the soprano is partially instinctive and partially the result of a serial process of reordering a sensical sentence.

Recorded at the Cambridge Young Composer's Network concert 2016.

Commissioned by The Wren Ensemble (Cambridge). 
The first (‘slow’) movement focusses on quite delicate, colouristic textures which are broken down and distorted. The second (‘fast’) movement has a more aggressive and driving character, especially considering the harp, which is so often treated as a very delicate or fragile instrument.

Profanities I ('slow')

Evanescent,
That is on the point of vanishing or becoming imperceptible. In Mathematics, said of a diminishing quantity: That is at the instant of becoming zero; infinitesimal. That quickly vanishes or passes away; having no permanence. Said of appearances, conditions, impressions, etc.
Effervescent,
That is in a state of bubbling heat.
That has the property of rising in bubbles.

Written for the Doelen Kwartet for their 25th anniversary.

Sung live by the cast after a series of workshops with me.

Texture #1 : for The Tempest – CAST

Four movements are embedded in this piece—corresponding to the four classical elements. The cello part spans the entire expressive capability of the instrument from the rich, earthy creaking to ethereal harmonics.

[HOSANNA IN EXCELSIS]
For 14 cellos and 4 trombones and offstage trombone quintet.

A c. 1500 fragment of music from the 'York Masses' (a setting of 'Hosanna in Excelsis') is used for the offstage quintet part. The fragment is sounded twice whilst the rest of the ensemble responds to, and de-constructs the historical sound.

Performed as part of the Post-Opera project in connection with Tent Rotterdam; Operadagen Rotterdam and V2 Rotterdam.
Tarwewijk Choir participated in 'Scores for Rotterdam'; a project by Mercedes Azpilicueta and John Bingham-Hall which seeks to bring aural attention to forgotten spaces in the city. This performance was the Tarwewijk choir's compositional response to the Mevlanaplein Railway overpass and was performed as part of a public intervention there. The event also included a public workshop/realisation of a score by John Bingham-Hall with the Groene Connectie, a green-spaces initiative in Rotterdam.
