This piyut belongs to the Reshut genre (see Leshoni Konanta) and was written by R. Shlomo Ibn Gabirol, the 11th century poet and philosopher.
It describes the feelings of the poet during the early hours of dawn. The emergence from the uncertainties of night and expectation to the light and warmth of sunshine converge at the moment of dawn and therefore create a perfect atmosphere for prayer and meditation. It is not surprising that the time set for singing piyutim in both the Aleppo and Morocco tradition is early morning, and that both of them include this piyut. Although the piyut seems at first glance to be just a rephrasing of the common theme of asking permission to pray, delving into it will reveal that it deals with a very powerful religious experience.
The poet describes his longing and quest for God’s closeness, a closeness that fills him with such emotions that cannot be expressed by words. Only poetry, which includes music and involves the whole body, can bring to light all the aspects of soul and spirit connecting to the Zimrat Enosh, the totality of mankind.
 The author is Rabbi Shlomo Ibn Gabirol.

Commentary Ahot Ktana (Little Sister) Synopsis: This is the song that commences the evening prayer (Arvit) of the first day of the Jewish New Year (Rosh Hashanah). It is the expressions of hope and prayer for a blessed New Year, by a nation that sits deep in exile. The song describes the distress of exile and the strangers that rule over our Holy Land. The nation sits in exile and their enemies seek out their destruction. However the nation of Israel sticks to G-d despite the hardships of exile. With the background of the bitter exile and the nation’s loyalty to G-d comes our request for redemption. Explanations of Stanzas: The little sister is the nation of Israel, a reference to the nation of Israel that first appeared in the Song of Songs. There is a request for redemption from the troubles of exile that stems from Moses’ prayer over his sister with the words ‘G-d please cure her please’. The disease we ask to be cured from is the exile. We ask that the year should end along with its curses, that the changing year should also bring a change from our sorrows. This blessing for the New Year is from the section Megila in the Talmud. The words ‘until what’ describe our helplessness as we ask G-d until when He will avert His eyes from out troubles even though He sees us sitting in distress. The words Evil ones are eating Your land is a reference to the strange rulers who conquered the Land of Israel. In this song there are two description of the nation of Israel, ‘cattle that the enemies (lions) dispersed’ and ‘a vineyard whose fence was invaded and whose grapes were picked and torn out’ and no remenants were left. There is a request that G-d spill His anger on the enemies of Israel. The terms ditch and prison are referring to the exile. The enemies stole and looted but not only did they harm Israels possesions they also harmed their souls but despite all this Israel never abandoned G-d. Israel is again compared to sheep and we request that G-d gather us lead us back to pasture in our homeland. The comparison of Israel to a vineyard is again mentioned and we pray that with the redemption the vineyard would blossom and grow and give choice grapes. The composer turns to the nation of Israel and tells us that the troubles of exile have come to an end as we hoped and that G-d would remember his promise to Israel and return to save us.

Adir Hu (English: Mighty is He, Hebrew אדיר הוּא) is a hymn sung by Jews worldwide at the Passover Seder. It switches rapidly between saying the virtues of God in an alphabet format (Aleph, Bet, Gimel,...), and expressing hope that God will "rebuild the Holy Temple speedily." Most of the virtues of God are adjectives (for instance, Holy (Kadosh) is he); however, a few are nouns. (Lord is he).
The tune of Adir Hu has gone through several variations over the years, but its origin is from the German minnesinger period.[citation needed] The earliest existing music for Adir Hu is found in the 1644 "Rittangel Hagada". The second form is found in the 1677 "Hagada Zevach Pesach", and the third and closest form can be found in the 1769 "Selig Hagada". In the 1769 version of the haggadah, the song was also known in German as the "Baugesang" (the song of the rebuilding of the Temple). A traditional German greeting on the night of Passover after leaving the synagogue was "Bau Gut" ("build well"), a reference to Adir Hu.
