Abstract Sounds is delighted to present our next guest mix featuring Yamah Karim, perhaps better known simply as Yamah. As far as Detroit selectors go few can match Yamah’s eclectic, tribal style and his ability to weave tracks together into a psychedelic journey. To fully appreciate Yamah’s style, an understanding of the context of his background is key. A child of Afghani immigrants living in Los Angeles, Yamah had incredibly unique musical influences. The confluence of latin rhythms like Reggaeton and Dembow along with the omnipresence of traditional Afghani rhythms at family gatherings are major influences in his musical expression today. His journey to DJing began as a teenager attending concerts in LA and had his first proper rave experience at EDC in LA after high school graduation. When the COVID pandemic hit and he was unable to continue attending concerts and raves, he taught himself how to mix and began uploading his mixes to the internet. Nowadays Yamah calls Detroit home and runs his own record label and party called Primal Colors.

When crafting his DJ sets, Yamah pays careful attention to the audience as well as the energy. Not just who, but how the audience will be listening is important, as a set made for a club is very different than one made for listening in the car. It’s important that the set feels like a journey and he tries to allow each track to dictate the next. One of the more prolific collectors in the Detroit scene, he tries to balance incorporating newer tracks he’s just acquired with older ones to ensure the set feels fresh, but also maintains his signature style. You’ll find that with Yamah’s mixes the genre rarely stays the same throughout. While he certainly could play an all techno set, the ability to transition effortlessly between genres adds a dynamism to the journey of his set that maintains the energy of the audience.
