For Matthew Greenidge, a rising reggae artist from Trinidad, the music is a mission, not a competition. Invoking the spiritual foundation of reggae, Greenidge's new album “Jah Rules Over All” (Jah Light Records) delivers contagious, positive messages in the spirit of modern roots. Indeed, an organic mix of contemporary riddims and live arrangements across the album's twelve tracks build a strong and unique narrative of encouragement, resilience and hope as told through Greenidge's singjay sensibility.

Fellow Trini reggae vocalists, including international recording star Queen Omega, Gyasi and King Solomon, add depth and breadth to this special project, a milestone in the history of Trinidadian reggae. Featuring production input from Trinidad and abroad such as Jahlight Records (Trinidad), One Harmony Records (UK), Flow Production (Switzerland) and Studio 53 (Trinidad), Jah Rules Over All puts everyday social commentary in a real world context, regardless of color or class.

"I really learned how to exist with purpose through reggae music," says Greenidge. Jah Rules Over All effectively shares that purpose with the world. The album will has been officially released in CD and digital formats which will be handled by IDC and BFM, respectively.

Soothing, uplifting harmonies on the first track out of the gate, "He Loves Forever", (also the first single off the album) are supported by strong messages against consumerism and the isms and schisms of everyday life. Revolutionary in its laser focus, Greenidge bears witness to the power of Jah on "Still Got To Give Praise" ("even after all these trials still gotta give praise"). 

Indeed, although "Life Is Not Easy", an easy going reggae beat and a seamless singjay flow from guest artist, Gyasi, does lighten the burden. Here, Gyasi is always one step ahead which pairs nicely with Greenidge's wary counteraction. Changing up the speed, "Your Love" takes hold of a bubbly riddim with chunky organ riffs leading the way. The foundation vibe has a light-hearted outcome--a love at first sight romace in which boy meets girl - boy likes girl - boy makes really catchy reggae love song to make sure she knows. 

Greenidge is serious about the music however and "Papa Stop Drink" is a stark reminder of its power which is also experienced on the next track, "Sweet Lady", a reggae ballad imbued with enough energy and power to sweep her off her feet. “Some modern reggae singers will draw on dancehall in a slick, overtly high-tech way, but on Jah Rules Over All, Matthew Greenidge demonstrates that a reggae singer can make extensive use of dancehall while remaining quite faithful to the spirit of classic roots reggae.” – Alex Henderson "Jah Rules Over All", the title track, boasts a combination of Greenidge deejaying on the verses and singing a melodic chorus where the refrain, "Trust in Jah if you really want to be free", rings true every time. 

Spiritual to the core, "Never Forget My King" is an opportunity for Greenidge to explain his role as an instrument of Jah while guest artist King Solomon offers up a perfect compliment in a plaintive meditation. One of Trinidad's most highly regarded conscious reggae singers, Queen Omega, provides perfect harmonies on eight tracks comes boldly forward on "Babylon Deception". The rockers riddim features a signature piano and lead guitar playfully straying from the driving beat resulting in a dynamic soundscape. 

Omega takes over with a singjay's grittiness softened by cool and deadly reality lyrics. Even revolutionaries have to let loose sometime and on "Dance With You" Matthew Greenidge plays with the listener in a way that invokes the spirit reggae's great love songs. "Never Drift Away" picks up the pace on a roots rock reggae and Greenidge deftly makes opposites attract as he switches between gruff vocals and soothing smoky harmonies. Where there is smoke there is fire and "Them Will Burn" is a fitting conclusion to Greenidge's Jah Rules Over All. Pitting a slowed down tempo against a fast chat style, Greenidge forces the listener to listen keenly to the dominant thoughtful, meditative message.

Matthew Greenidge - Babylon Deception Feat Queen Omega

'Excellent' , born Stacey Lewis on 7th March 1979 hails from Mc Bean village, Couva, Trinidad. As a new and upcoming reggae artist Excellent promises to take the music industry by storm with her soulful yet revolutionary type of music. Lewis who has a firm religious background began singing in Church as part of the choir and later went on to do solo pieces. Music was always a part of this young woman's life though as she had spent many years listening to her father (who was a Disc Jockey) as he ritualistically maneuvered the turntables. Sometimes she even went along with him when he went out on jobs. 

Some of her favorite artists whom she believes have influenced and inspired her include Calypsonions: The Mighty Sparrow, Lord Kitchener, Lord Melody, Atillah, Zandolie, Watchman, Cro Cro and Reggae artists like Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Jacob Miller, Pablo Moses, Culture, Don Carlos, Max Romeo, Burning Spear, to name a few and in more recent times Buju Banton, Beres Hammond and Stephen Marley have joined the rank. She also paid tribute to her late aunt who used to perform at various calypso tents bearing the name 'Madame Excellent'. Stacey adopted name, Excellent, in honor of carrying on the musical tradition of her family. Later Stacey went on to attach her own interpretation of such as it applies to her. She went on to explain the importance that a name held for our fore parents and the fact that the bearer would usually adopt certain characteristics of the name given. It was because of this that she had embraced this name aspiring not just to be good, but to be 'EXCELLENT' in all her endeavors. 

During her teenage years Excellent started to compose and sing calypsos. Her first competition was at the Civilian Conservation Corp. (a programme coordinated by the Ministry of National Security where youths are taught various life skills) in 1998 where she won the Calypso Monarch crown as well as the crown for most humorous calypso that year. However she did not do much performing after that but continued to compose calypsos for youngsters in her community who took part in school competitions and various other community based activities. 

It was through a quest to find a deeper connection to her spirituality and purpose for being that she found that she had developed a unique way of expressing her thoughts, feelings and experiences through music and sometimes even a simple observation or a spiritual inclination could be the basis for a new song. Being everything but outspoken, she quickly embraced this new found talent and adopted music as her first language. Her first recorded song entitled 'Lady Excellent' was recorded at AIRWAVES PRODUCTION STUDIO in Da badie, Trinidad. It was generally an introduction of herself and her mission within the music industry. That song however, was never released and she went on to compose a few dancehall songs with which she made random stage performances at various night clubs and community events. Still not satisfied with where she was spiritually, she allowed her musical career to go dormant for some time while she continued to express her inspirations through poetry. 

It was not until late in 2011 though, after a Luciano concert at Isa's Lounge in Couva that she took back up her pen to compose and realized that she was now being inspired to write a different brand of music. It was a more soothing, spiritually and emotionally deeper type of music. In 2014 she met with Trinidadian label, JahLight Records in a quest to express her new found thoughts and they did a song entitled, ‘LOVE LANGUAGE’. Although Love Language is not the first song that she has written since that transition, it is her first recording since and her second in general. When asked why she chose to release this song as her 1st official release, Excellent expressed the fact that apart from all the turmoil and confusion that exists in the world today, apart from all the languages that are spoken and observed, love is least utilized and exercised. 'Have you ever hugged someone long enough to feel both hearts beat in correspondence to each other?' 'Or make an eye contact that sends a wave of electricity throughout your entire body yet you can't find the words to explain it? ‘Well love has got a language of its own, a language that has the power to comfort, heal and restore.'

Excellent's main objective as a musician is to bring a positive message through music. Her music aims to rebuild what has been broken down, morally, spiritually and socially; to restore what has been lost, to heal that which is hurting and to bring hope and encouragement to the oppressed and depressed. She intends to achieve this by allowing the spirit of God to work through her to put the right words into her heart and grant her the knowledge to know when is the right time to bring it forth. 'The only way I can have a positive impact on society' she said, 'is by practicing what I preach, by being the change that I would like to see. For her it's not about the money but enriching the mind, body and spirit, which is found in the messages of love, peace, and togetherness which she emphasizes through her songs. Through her music she wants people to know that there is a better way and that success comes through obeying the will of the Father. ‘Everyone on the face of this Earth has a purpose for being and God in His infinite mercies would not have brought us here if He didn't know that we were capable of fulfilling that purpose. And while at times the road might be rough and our goals might appear to be unattainable, if we stick to His plan and put our faith and trust in God, all things are possible!

There’s light amid the darkness and despair that seem bent on transforming God’s world and that light is being reflected by some of Trinidad and Tobago’s positive, musical minds. As the year’s end looms, a positive wind will blow across the land and music will be its fuel. 

In what has been described as “a project guided by the Holy Spirit of God,” comes a gospel reggae contribution aimed at positively enforcing God’s word to people across the world. Steering this new effort is Akeunde Pemberton- a music producer who’s no stranger to the positive musical movement. He’s a game changer, a believer and he’s certainly a soldier in God’s army. Together with some of the hemisphere’s most talented artistes, Pemberton has created The Royal Majestic Riddim- a full fledged gospel reggae delivery, signed, sealed and packaged with nothing but God’s love and blessings. “This riddim is our declaration to the world that Christ is indeed supreme. He is above any other and He is royal and majestic in glory and in all His splendor,” said Pemberton. His conviction about the need for this project and others he’s spearheaded in the past, is strong. “These projects are required of me. We all play a part in the business that is life. My part- my role, is clear. Together with the artistes I work with, we’ve been called on to deliver positive tunes to the people, teach them about God and what he wants from all of us. By the grace of God we’ll champion it. That’s a great cause to champion we think,” said the Jahlight record label executive. 

The Royal Majestic Riddim features five artistes. From Da Gospel Diva, with her single, “Woman You’re Royal,” which features new gospel reggae sensation, Jaron Nurse, to Jas Rose who sings, “Diary of A Jesus Lover” and Jah Kiley with “Be Still”, Anointed Ones with “You Saved Me” and Designer’s Original who sings,” He Did Good”, this riddim is testimony of God’s greatness, as seen and felt by these five musicians and the creator of the riddim himself. “Everything about this project was guided by the Holy spirit of God,” said Pemberton, adding, “from the project’s name, to the artistes chosen, to the engineering process, to the artwork- it was all His work.”

The songs has been digitally distributed on September 11th via New York based music distributor, Fox Fuse and downloads will are available for purchase via Amazon, iTunes, Spotify and all other reputed digital download retailers. 

Jahlight Records has maintained its standing in the music business over the years.
