Ida y Vuelta’s presentations come from a long tradition of Mexican folk music called Son Jarocho. The genre is a fusion of African, Spanish and Indigenous music and poetry. Ida y Vuelta’s instrumentation is native to the Veracruz region and includes jaranas (8 string small guitars), requinto (lead 4 string guitar), leona (acoustic bass), zapateado (percussive foot tapping), quijada de burro (donkey jaw) and they also incorporate the cajón (wood peruvian box) and cajita (small peruvian box) for reinforcements.
 
Ida y Vuelta plays traditional “sones” which some date back over 300 years as well as their own arrangements and original tunes.
 
They respectfully perform this music and aspire to make known its rich historical and musical value, specifically here in the U.S.

El son jarocho nace en la region del sotavento en el sur de Veracruz y es influenciado por las mezclas de africanos, españoles e indígenas. Son del Viento’s music is rooted in the son jarocho folk tradition, a centuries old fusion of indigenous, Arabic-Spanish and African music from Veracruz, México.

Today, son jarocho incorporates a range of timeless elements, melodic and rhythmic instruments, and poetic lyrics, all gathered around the tarima wooden platform, where community dancers carry the percussive groove of the fandango.

Son del Viento’s members range from seasoned Mexican son performers to youthful talent carrying son jarocho into the next generation. SdV members are: Raúl Fernández (requinto, vocals, cajón), Jaime Garza (leona bass, vocals), Ricardo Salazar (jarana, vocals), Maya Fernández (jarana, vocals, zapateo dance, quijada), Jim Hartman (marimbol, vocals), and Adrian Alcantar (jarana, cajón, vocals, dance). Son del Viento’s rhythms accompany fandango (dance parties), where all are invited to share in collective music that can last all night. Son del Viento has performed since 2004 at music festivals, cultural and educational programs.

Jaime Garza is a bassist, producer and an active cultural promoter with Pachanka Music Culture presenting world music, son jarocho and independent latin rock in Chicago.

As a bassist his style is eclectic and heavily influenced by Son Jarocho, Latin-American caribbean and Rock. His musical background knows no borders, his contributions and collaborations as a bassist range from son jarocho, rock, cumbia, metal, punk, funk, ska and reggae to experimental fusion genres. Garza’s prominent bands are Dos Santos and Almafuerte.

He is credited as producer, co-producer, songwriter or collaborator.
