Raashan Ahmad was on a euro tour some weeks ago and during his stop in Berlin we were talking music over dinner. I told Raashan that we are about to release an album with Ta-ku (which has happened in the meantime, check out the "DOWHATYOULOVE" album) and he asked me whether I knew that he recorded a full album with him some time ago during his last australian tour. No, I didn't know that and getting my hand on the album turned out to be not too easy as it couldn't be located for quite a while. In the end Raashan found it on an old hard drive and I was a fan of the album instantly. It's raw hip hop in the truest sense. None of the songs are longer then 3 minutes, quite some are around the 2 minute mark. Nothing but dope beats and raps with some unreleased Ta-ku instrumentals sprinkled in between. 

In celebration of both artists releases on Jakarta Records this year we figured it would be nice to give it away for free digitally and even better we decided that pressing it on wax would be nice too. Only 250 copies, numbered, no repress, the first 80 copies on clear wax.

After a highly impressive debut on the scene late last year with the Do You EP, Reginald Omas Mamode IV returns with a deeper, bolder statement of intent with the As We Move EP.

2013 saw Reggie’s ‘earthbound heart and soul music’ gain widespread support from Lauren Laverne and Lefto, for whom he did a one-take live session. Unsurprisingly, he found his biggest fan in Gilles Peterson, who featured Mamode’s cover of the lost Roy Ayers classic ‘Keep On Walking’ in his shortlist for tracks of the year, put ‘Do You’ on his Brownswood Bubblers compilation, and invited him to play live at his St Barnabas new music showcase. 

This EP takes the tough, organic soul of Do You and twists it into highlights such as the raw 4/4 of Fire Burning, the EP’s lead track. Know You Better unfolds amidst West Coast synths and jazz percussion, whereas Understand Me, already receiving heavy support from Gilles & Lefto, is a slow burning London soul jam about relationship communication breakdown.

The Gradients project was created to blend different creative platforms. Our philosophy is that nothing in life is black or white, but a gradient. We explore this concept through various intersections and collaborations between mediums including (not limited to) visual art, design, dance, film, music, architecture, food, computer science, and more.

The most recent Gradients Project that NY-based artist Kathy Lee (aka Yaeji) spearheaded has been the Gradients Mix series--a collection of 30 minute mixes that aurally translate a gradient of 2 colors. She has also been hosting Live Gradients shows in New York where each musical performer is assigned a color to interpret through their set.

"'Hue' was an audio-visual study for me. When I first decided to challenge myself and make multiple tracks that could sit under one theme to be an EP or album, I was stuck with the preconceived idea that it has to hold one consistent sound. That very quickly became limiting for me, so I decided to think of the songs as colors instead, flowing from one to the other like a gradient, to inspire my production. That is why my tracks are each named a color and they all connect to become one, long gradient."

All the tracks were written and recorded at Chilin’ Straße studio in Berlin over the last weeks, but the artwork was made as a sketch to another album during the previous winter. 

I would like to dedicate this album to my nephew who was born two weeks ago. 

Speaking of new music, in few days I’m going to drop another album called “Better now” which is a beautiful collaboration with Q3000. Stay tuned!
