Betty Lou Landreth - I Can't Stop Intrumental 45 Version

One of the most influential and underground Hammond organists of the 1960's was "Big" John Patton as he was then known. If it was the groove that you wanted Patton was your Man and he made several albums for the legendary Blue Note label, many of which went on to sell for eye watering prices. As his style went out of favor, some of the recordings never saw the light of day until almost 20 years later and at the same time Patton slipped into the background. He resurfaced in the 1980s and went into the studio. Among his albums Soul Connection, originally released in 1983 on Nilva Records has now been re-released on what many consider to be the Re-Issue Label of these times; Jazz Room Records.


Patton had a strong band with him on this record. Avant Garde trombonist Grachan Moncur III fits in just nicely with some funky lines and solo's. Acid jazz Guitar Hero Melvin Sparks rides in the all important funk grooves but the revelation has to be saxophonist Grant Reed, who you may know from the Jazz Room Release of "Shamek Farrah & Folks" and who was a mainstay of the Mongo Santamaria set up. Jazz Exile Alvin Queen has been part of the sound set ups of Junior Mance, Stanley Turrentine and Charles Tolliver, among others.
The whole album sounds as if it was laid down in a Rudy Van Gelder session in the mid 60's and then languished in a vault somewhere, waiting until the fan base had returned. That time is now, this is a Funky Organ Groove with a Spiritual Soul Swing!

JOHN PATTON - SOUL CONNECTION

This dedication mix is long overdue. In 1996, my friend Dave played me "Journey to Satchidanada" and I was blown away. A year or two later, I recovered a weathered copy of the record from a book and record store on East 7th Street in Manhattan while digging around with the same friend and it became a prized possession. Over the coming years I educated myself on more of her music, digging up copies here and there, and feel a bit lucky to have grabbed most of her records before the "craze" hit sometime in the late 2000s. It's truly unique and beautiful music - I admit that I can't totally stomach some of the more free-leaning cuts she recorded, in the same way I can't get into the late work of her also-legendary husband, but when I put these albums on the turntable it truly is a bit of an "inter-dimensional" experience, like the cover art of her "World Galaxy" album.

Belated happy birthday to Alice Coltrane! Besides the first track, which is a clip from a seminal session she did with Marian McPartland for NPR's "Piano Jazz" series, these are all from my personal copies of her albums.

we came across this great mix by caykh recordings of the golden days of somali music. sounds from before the war, songs from before the beautiful city of mogadishu became a battle ground for 2 decades. 

"This Mix of 70's and 80's Somali sound is a rich blend of traditional Somali folk music infused with Western funk, rock and reggae and a touch of Indian, Arabic and African flavors.

There are hardly any proper releases of this soulful sound of guitar, synthesizer and drums. I spent some months finding, compiling and editing rips of TV and live recordings on old VHS tapes and radio broadcasts to cassette tapes and here is what I got. Enjoy! With love from Mogadishu."

Frankfurt-based label Analog Africa is easily one of the most noteworthy labels rescuing and reissuing Afro sounds.

In 2015, the label gave us an exceptional anthology of Afro-Cuban pioneer Amara Touré, not to mention a compilation of tracks plucked straight from the dance floors of ’70s Senegal. Last year, they blew our human minds with some of the most extraterrestrial synth music we’ve ever heard on Space Echo.

This year, the label turns ten. To celebrate label boss Samy Ben Redjeb and his DJ partner Pedo Knopp have recorded a special mix which we’re delighted to share here.

“What is special about this mix is the fact that all the songs, except one, will be released on Analog Africa in 2017,” says Samy. “They have all been handpicked by myself and mixed in real time, without loops or any other kind of gimmicks by Pedo.”

It’s a synth-ridden journey from reggae in the Horn of African to Cosmic sounds of Cabo Verde, wavey soca-boogie monsters and other proto-electronic Afro jams.

His drumming was the driving force behind Fela Kuti’s Africa ’70s band and he also recorded a string of solo albums. His latest release 'A Tribute to Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers' honours another extraordinary drummer and is released on Blue Note. Art Blakey was an idol for Tony Allen and Art Blakey was inspired by trips to West Africa, recording African-inspired jazz LPs in the 50's and 60's. The EP was recorded live with his 8-piece band and is a preview of his forthcoming first album for the classic Blue Note record label.
