Soundway’s second foray into South East Asia is focused on North-East Thailand, the epicentre of Molam and Luk Thung Isan music. Hypnotic phin & khaen riffs, pulsing, electrified country rhythms and heartfelt vocals punctuate another journey into the lesser known reaches of 1970s Thai music. 

The first volume of The Sound of Siam, released in 2011, was the first introduction for many to the artistry and innovations of modern Thai music. One of the most popular compilations on Soundway Records the music even made it onto the big screen with ‘Mae Jom Ka Lon’ by Dao Bandon featured on the soundtrack of ‘The Hangover Part II’.  In an interview with LA Times Mick Jagger spoke of discovering the collection that “some nutter put together” after hearing the riff from Jumpin’ Jack Flash on one of the tracks from the compilation.

In this second volume of The Sound of Siam the focus is firmly on the music the sounds of north-east Thailand, or Isan and attempts to show how a genre evolved and developed from essentially an acoustic tradition with specific geographic roots, to one that started to incorporate other instruments and influences that reached out to the Isan diaspora around the country.

The term molam is actually two separate words pushed together: Mo meaning ‘expert’ or ‘doctor’ and lam meaning ‘to sing’. Hence the literal translation means ‘singing expert’. Many molam records have extended intros that allow a vocalist to establish the theme of the song, as well as flex their improvisational muscles.

Luk thung (literally ‘song of the countryside’)is a much broader, rural style that had a bigger impact nationally. Artists like Saksiam Petchompu began fusing this style with molam, a move which propelled him to national fame. You can hear the influence of western funk, as well as Thai arrangements, on the luk thung Isan (as the hybrid became known) smash Jeb Jin Jeb Jai included here.

The Sound of Siam 2 - Molam & Luk Thung Isan from North-East Thailand 1970 - 1982’ features 19 tracks, many appearing outside of Thailand for the first time. Both CD and double LP & is accompanied with detailed liner notes written by compilers Chris Menist and Maft Sai.

Always a peak record at any Paradise Bangkok event, 'Teoy Salap Pamaa' is another melodic mode. Pamaa is actually the Thai (and Isan) word for Burma, implying that this teoy might have taken its lead from a Burmese rhythm or melody. There is frenetic interplay between the khaen and cymbals creating an urgency tempered only by Kunchai’s ever-authoritative performance with her post- Ubon Pattana Band group, Mueng Dok Bua. Once again, she has the relationship blues as she decries men as being perennially untrustworthy liars.

The Funkees were an afro-rock group formed in Nigeria in 1969. It wasn't long before promoters ithe UK came calling and they packed up their instruments and moved to London where they quickly established a fierce reputation on the live circuit and quickly gained prominence in the expatriate West African and West Indian music scene. They specialised in funky, upbeat, highly dance able afro-rock. Chyke, born in 1949 in Lagos, joins PJ to tell us the story of The Funkees.

In between 2003 and 2007 or 2008 I used to travel to South East Asia pretty much whenever I had semester holidays. It was before the tons of Thai music reissues and finding records was actually tricky since finding stores proved to be a challenging task (at least for me). 

Some days ago I started listening to some of the vinyl I picked up back then (and one or two more recent trades) and figured it would be nice to make a little mix, in this case focussing on the "funky" stuff not the vital string band scene. All original vinyl for what its worth. 

I hope you guys enjoys the mix. Thanks for all the support in 2014, we're looking forward to 2015.

Two years after an acclaimed first album, Al Sunny and Favorite Recordings proudly present "Planets", carrying on their collaboration and bringing it to another level. 
Al Sunny is a young and talented singer/musician/composer emerging from the French soul music scene.

During his conservatory studies, he refined his knowledge and confirmed his desire to write and compose. He quickly matured the music that he truly loves, inspired by artists such as Tim Maia, America, Al Green, and Al Jarreau. Giving birth to the majority of his compositions through his guitar, he always seeks to bring his songs’ melody to the forefront.  
During his studies he kept experiencing live performing on different scenes and confirmed his choice for a musical career, while also meeting many brilliant musicians, including Florian  Pellissier, who later introduced him to Pascal Rioux and Favorite Recordings.

It resulted in 2017 in "Time to Decide" release, a dazzling first album establishing Al Sunny’s music and writing style, looking towards the 70s and 80s Westcoast movement, infused with Blue-Eyed-Soul, Pop and Folk flavors. Built on the same influences, "Planets" is made of 8 new  compositions  (including a  CD  and  digital  bonus), and is clearly a continuation of  its cadet, asserting Al Sunny’s talent and singing skills. Fully recorded live and analogic in  Paris, this  new  albumalso  stands  out  by  an impressivelevel  of  production, faithful to some  classics of the genre.
Mixing catchy melodies, soulful vocals, warm and heavy bass, strong beat and beautiful guitars and keyboards harmonies, "Planets" just perfectly meets the AOR and Modern-Soul golden era standards.
