“I’ve known Keith since he was a young performer. I think one of his very first recordings was in my house in Mittagong, near Bowral. He’s a really lovely guy and a great guitar player and singer.

I was recording in L.A and Keith was in and out of the studio in three hours. I think his wife had been filming in Morocco.
He was doing American Idol,and he was also doing shows in America, and flying to Morocco on the weekends to see his wife and kids. I rang him up and asked if he would do this song with me. When he got there, he was so tired. I said, ‘Are you all right, Keith? You should have said no.’ And he said, ‘Why am I going to say no to you?’ It was so great.”

“Mahalia is a phenomenal singer. She’s one of the best girls I know. I know I’m biased, because I’m her father, but she’s got a great work ethic, she sings harder than anyone I know, she’s a caring person, a great mother and she’s a great mentor for young artists. She picked ‘Stand Up’, which is one of my favourite tunes from the Heat album. 

I wanted to write a protest song. It was around the time of one of the elections [the 1993 Paul Keating/John Hewson election] and people had to get out and vote. If you don’t get involved, you’re not gonna make a difference – it was all that sort of stuff.”

‘I’d Die To Be With Tonight’  was a big song for me, one of the pivotal songs of my career.

I wanted to work with Diesel and this was his first choice. Every time I work with Mark [Lizotte], it’s fantastic – he’s family. We always have a great time playing together. It still has the essence of the song, but it just sounds completely different to me – it just has a new energy, which I love. It’s modernised the song but also taken me back to 1987, or whenever it was when The Injectors album came out and when I was first recording that song.“

“While I was in America earlier this year, I wanted to tip my hat to an old friend Jonathan Cain.

Freight Train Heart was a really big record for me, one of the best records I’ve ever made, and a lot of that record was written with Jonathan Cain, who was the piano player in The Babys and then Journey. So Jonathan and I got together with Neal Schon, the guitar player from Journey, and we made the Freight Train Heart album together.

So I got those guys in to record ‘Going Down Alone’. It’s one of my favourite songs and the guys helped me breathe new life into it.”

Going Down Alone (feat. Journey)

‘Ride The Night Away’ with Steven Van Zandt

“The whole 30:30 album has been made quite quickly and spontaneously. The first track we put down was ‘Ride The Night Away’ which was originally on For The Working Class Man album.

Back then, Steven Van Zandt sent that song to me via Gary Gersh, who was the A&R man for Geffen Records in America.
When I got it, it was just the perfect demo. I just put it in the right key for me and I did it.

I’ve been a fan of Springsteen since 1973 – the E Street Band is one of my favourite bands in the world, but I’d never seen them live – we’d never crossed paths and I was always working when they were touring.

But when they came back to Australia this time (March 2014), and I was working with them in New Zealand, I got this idea in my head that I would like to do this song with Little Steven. I went up to him and said, ‘This song you sent me 30 years ago, I wouldn’t mind recording it with you.’ He was a fan. And he loves music. So Steven came to my house.
My son Jackie played drums, and I got Steven playing the guitar solo and singing harmonies. Virtually, it was take three, but we spent about 12 hours together, just talking. I got him to tell us stories about The Sopranos.”
