Dark Waves - Dark EDM - 2021

A premier recording of 'The Castle Falls' by Jake Few. Performed in Bath Spa University's Michael Tippet Centre's Auditorium by the New Music Ensemble.

Jake Few is a composition student at Hertfordshire  University. Commissioned specifically for the ensemble, 'The Castle Falls' follows the narrative of a medieval battle. Featuring an unusual combination of instruments, this piece explores the textual characteristics and capabilities of different instrument groups.

Listen for the defining pivot moments throughout. With colourful harmonies in the woodwinds, combined with the rubato tempo, the piece opens with a melancholic yet unresolved feel. In contrast, we next hear a passage dominanted by close string harmonies and strong melodic content in the upper strings and brass, creating warm shifting chords as these parts blend together. Following a crescendo build, we hear the mid-section climax, introducing a prominant and aggressive percussion section. The penultimate buildup and final climax displays the technical ability of the Bath Spa 'New Music' Ensemble with fast string passages, alternating stacatto and legato brass phrases, and a unifying epic conlusion drawing thematic parallels from a medieval castle raid.

John Gordon is a music student at Bath Spa University.
'Un nouveau monde peur' is based on a spoken word piece written by John Gordon called 'A Scared New World' (which is a pun of Aldous Huxley's 'Brave New World') the piece illustrates the flaws in society and the disruption of the natural order.

A premier recording of 'The Fox and the Rabbit' by Cornelia Todd. Performed in Bath Spa University's Michael Tippet Centre's Auditorium by the New Music Ensemble.

Cornelia Todd is an Actor Musician at Guildford School of Acting. 
Inspired by a scene from the film 'A Testament of Youth', 'The Fox and the Rabbit' reflects the unlikely relationship between two lovers separated by the hardships of war and death, with the idea that a life of love is delicate, it can be lost or cause heart break or happiness beyond all happiness. It can walk away completely out of your control, but no matter what, when two people find each other, it leaves an imprint in their hearts that lasts a lifetime.

The Fox and the Rabbit - By Cornelia Todd

The National Heritage Ironwork Group (NHIG) are staging BathIRON to draw attention to our ironwork heritage and the skills that sustain it. Whilst exploring where the festival would be situated, Andy Thearle, NHIG secretary, noticed the Parade Gardens bandstand was seriously in need of some TLC and so the idea of creating a beautiful, new replacement for the old balustrade was born. Being a bandstand it clearly had to be a musical themed construction so a competition was launched in collaboration with Bath Spa University, to compose a musical score for the balustrade. From all the submissions Jake Garrat’s specially composed musical score 'Hammer and Anvil' was selected as the winner. Work has now begun on taking this composition and forging it into iron to form the basis of the striking piece of public art, which will be donated to the city for posterity.
