From a young age, music has always inspired me as it always been a part of my life since a young age. Coming from a highly musical household where music was always playing, and I grew up listening to a wide range of genres and artist, ranging from, Rock & Roll, Reggae, Folk to vocal groups, Soul, Motown and Pop. However, the key genres that contributed to the musician I am today was contemporary jazz and blues.
As a child my mother bought me a piano which lead me to take piano lessons, however this did not last very long as I soon realised that I was more likely to learn more teaching myself at my own pace. From that point, whilst all my friends were out on the football pitch, I could be found at home on the piano learning my favourite songs. This period in my life taught me so much about the general feel for music and the ability to improvise in the most creative way possible. Soon after, I joined a large barbershop chorus following my mother’s footsteps, during this time I developed my vocal range and presentation skills as well choreography and audience participation.
After finishing school, I went onto South Derbyshire Music College, where I felt like an outsider as I was the only pianist in the group playing mainly classical music as others were into heavy rock, guitars and drums. Luckily, I made a few friends who played in a Blue’s band which also happened to one of my favourite genres of music. I jammed with the band for a few months and then decided to learn the guitar as I couldn’t carry a piano with me. Luckily, learning how to play the guitar came very naturally to me and also, even started playing the drums whilst no-one was around.
During this time at college I was able to teach myself how to play the guitar, the drums, bass and record and produce to a high level. This took my natural ear for music to another level.
Music hasn’t always been easy even though it may seem like, there are lots of obstacles in the way and decisions to make, the main ones that I have had to face whilst getting where I am today, wanting to show my skills and abilities in each show however being limited to a certain amount of time it can be extremely difficult. Another downfall is when people coming very involved with my music and promising me the world however fail to deliver any of it!
The main thing in the music industry is to keep positive, I still many dreams and ambitions that I need to fulfill. I want to be a lifelong artist, not just a one hit wonder. I want people to be listening and singing my songs, I want to perform at a world recognised festival even the little things like sign my first autograph. These things are all part of my dream that one day I hope will all come true!
My sound is a finely tuned blend of a wide range of genres mixed together to create a variety of sounds to please all ranging from jazz rock and dance, to epic orchestral piano based ballads with a pinch of blues and R&B to create a new and exciting fusion. I would say that me as a solo artist, I am different because there are not really many artists or bands out there at the moment that are well known for playing at an instrument. I being a multi-instrumentalist, one of my aims is to bring that back into fashion and I envy those artist that are still recording such as John Mayer etc. I have tried to make my sound is different and unique by pushing to the extreme and testing the boundaries as far as mixing genres is concerned and I am certain there is something for all.
