Double Standard by David Dossett

Music for Miniature Landscapes, for guitar quartet, was written in 2014 for the highSCORE festival in Pavia, Italy.

The piece uses statistically generated fields, superimposed onto simple algorithmic processes and the occasional 'compositional' intervention to create complex but intuitable textures and progressions - at least that is the intention!

The work is characterised by long parametric transformations that cause the music to move between states: dense texture to monody, obvious to incoherent and so on. However, these states differ only in terms of the magnitude of the variables used in their generation and do not exhibit any boundaries or transitions: any state changes, then, are phenomena which are imposed ‘from the outside’ by the listener, as are the details of exactly what they are and when they occur.

Music For Miniature Landscapes

When I first began this piece, it started as a simple study in orchestration: combining timbre, texture, and gesture to form an immersive sound experience for the audience.  However, about half way through writing the piece, during the slower ‘B’ section featuring flute, harp, and viola, it became apparent that the piece was much more than just a simple compositional exercise. I realized that a journey of some sort was forming, but I still didn’t know quite where it was headed. I knew that much of the framework of the piece was inspired by nature, from the cascading waterfall of the woodwinds at the start, to the unexpected dance of planets in orbit during the climax, to glistening pointillistic textures reminiscent of light filtering through tree branches. Still, for a long while, I couldn’t place my finger on a fitting title. Finally, after having completed the piece, I came across a phrase from a poem titled “A Million Flecks of Light” by Janet Brennan whose use of vivid language and nature imagery resonated deeply with my intent for the piece. Thus, as a million flecks of light was born. It is my hope that as you listen to the piece, you will be suddenly and inexplicably carried away on an adventure, whether it be through a fluttering forest, or to the yet unexplored corners of the universe.

A brief study using Kofi Agawu's concept of re-composition as analysis to analyze the timbre of the theme song from "Friends." The song is reconstructed with attention payed as much as possible to what I perceive as the timbral elements of the song rather than the harmonic or pitch content, though these are inextricably linked.
