Vinyl collector, DJ and producer Hun Choi (aka Hunee) is the rarest of artists.

Choi’s sets straddle genres without sounding like a forced education, showing both his wide array of knowledge and his deep understanding of the dancefloor. A Berlin resident for many years, Choi recently upped sticks and moved out to Amsterdam, so it seemed almost inevitable that he’d end up working with the city’s stories Rush Hour imprint.

The label released Hunee’s debut album Hunch Music earlier this year, and it highlighted just how versatile Choi is as a producer. Giving requisite nods to Detroit and Chicago, Choi tracks through house and techno’s cinematic side with a unique lightness, bringing his expertise and pacing as a DJ to his productions with ease.

That same expertise can be heard throughout Hunee’s FACT mix. There’s nothing showoffy here, rather Choi has hand-picked a selection of summery deep cuts from his extensive catalogue of rarities, blending fuzzy soul, melancholy disco, hypnotic Kosmische music and plenty more to emerge with a mix that practically demands the clouds to part.

Hunee will be performing at Farr Festival this summer – 16-18 July to be precise – so if you’re in the Hertfordshire area, make sure you head over to the Farr site to investigate the expansive lineup and snag tickets.

About the mix

I’ve been thinking about a concept for a mix titled “As the city sleeps” for some time. Soundtracking one of my favourite times of day, between 4-5am, the witching hour, when you fall in love, spend time getting to know the things about your friends you never knew and when towns and cities feel like your own.
When I was asked to contribute an hour of music to the inaugural “Monolithic Installation" (more info below), an immersive light installation in Bristol at Motion this summer it was the perfect catalyst to finally record the mix. I have gone back in and worked on it since and am happy to share it with you now.

As the city sleeps, a mixtape [January 2018]

Hunee stopped by Brilliant Corners on a cold Sunday in February for an unannounced six-hour set. Decked out with hanging ferns, floor cushions, an oil lamp and visuals by Cherrystones, the East London spot was even cosier than usual, and Hunee started out playing some of his favourites field recordings and experimental records, before slowly building the dance floor with his collection of music from around the globe.

Syncopation - a musical term to describe a variety of rhythms which are in some way unexpected. What a great word to describe Baronhawk's musical style. He always gives us something fresh and unexpected and his FAMILY mix is no exception. Dancing between jazz, breakbeat, house, disco, and many fun places in between, the 2 hour mix holds lots of surprises including some Baronhawk originals throughout.

@midland: “With this mix I wanted to try and capture the sound of me in the club during a long set in the part of the night when you and the crowd are locked in to a groove; a time when you’re able to make left turns, but it feels totally natural. As ever unreleased records sit alongside new records alongside records that came out 10/20/30 years ago. I definitely wanted to build to a more electro/rave crescendo in the middle of this, and try and plot a course through some broken stuff towards the end. I really enjoyed recording this one!”
