One of the pioneering icons within neurofunk, BTK has remained a pinnacle part of the drum & bass scene. And his imprint Dutty Audio has also helped pave the way for similar artists, bringing newcomers into fray with every slicing, hard-driving release. For their next output, they've brought on board Mizo for a ferocious rework of collaborative track 'Mind Control', a monster delivered first by Optiv & BTK.

Mizo has already made himself known within the 174bpm world as part of Gydra, a production outfit who need little introduction. Born out of Russia, his music was nurtured within its dance music culture and his remix of 'Mind Control' is a testament to this. Whilst channelling the same furious vibe as its predecessor, his take on 'Mind Control' is violently built, with every layer adding to its last alongside crashing drums peddles and an unforgiving bassline. The track comes thick and fast before it rolls you through all-out anarchy, demonstrating Mizo's undeniable skill as a solo act and as part of a team. Dutty Audio brings the fire once again.

SPIDER’s initial creeping rhythm grows in stature over its introduction, quickly becoming a brash arpeggiated lead that provides the springboard for the track’s primary aspect, a sharply edged bassline that moves to a funk fueled rhythm atop a torrent of percussion. DEXTEMS are the latest artists to emerge from the fires of the NEUROPUNK forge, making their debut on NEUROPUNK RECORDING’s series that focuses on novel artists honing their sounds within the heat of the label’s crucible. Bringing with them an EP entitled HEAD CRUSHER, DEXTEMS make no pretense to the aggressive fervor of their sonic style as they emerge still smouldering from the NEUROPUNK forge, imbuing the four tracks within with the energy of roaring flame.

Opened by its title track, the HEAD CRUSHER EP wastes no time in working towards its stated goal with an onslaught of devilishly distorted basslines meeting the listener in auditory combat within the EP’s first minute. Though monstrous in their initial impact, these basslines are carried upon a distinctly funk fueled percussive rhythm for the making of a diabolic and enrapturing mixture. RATCHET follows in a similar stylistic form, making use of distinctly rubberoid bases to great effect as it sets them rebounding amidst the selfsame funky atmosphere. SYNTHET then opts for a different approach to its two predecessors, setting its rapid percussive pulses amidst a gauntlet of sharply synthesized basses and leads that weave throughout the track as the drumbeat dodges between them. The EP is closed with the scientific sonics of FLYING MACHINES, which carries the listener effortlessly to great heights before dropping them atop a rolling breakbeat and electrified basslines that carry them through to the EP’s final notes.

With HEAD CRUSHER, veteran duo DEXTEMS braves the fires of the NEUROPUNK FORGE to craft new sonic weapons built upon their many years of production experience. Deliberate in its title, HEAD CRUSHER is not merely a name, but rather a promise that DEXTEMS makes sure to fulfill on the four tracks within.

How long had he been in the waiting room? Time seemed to pass in an orderless fashion within this place, speeding up or slowing down, simply stopping or skipping forwards seemingly in accord with its own whims. Looking up from the television set before him, the man stole a glance at the receptionists at the front desk, who continued working diligently as before with little a thought spared in his direction. Checking his watch next, the man pondered at the time. When had his appointment been? 10 am? The watch read 10:05, and he did hope he might be called back soon. After all it was only a small matter, something wrong with his skin, though exactly what he could not remember. Leaning his head back to peer through the door to the examination rooms, the man noticed handprints adorning the window set within it. How charming that the doctors and nurses had had their children decorate their workplace, he thought with a smile. And such a nice smell the office had too! He hadn’t noticed it at first, but the clinic had a distinct scent of decay, quite alike to smells he had first discovered in the woods behind his grandparents’ house. Yes, that was it, that moist, rotting scent that came to the nose when a curious child first lifted a small log to discover what secrets might lay underneath. The memories flooded back to him. Such pleasant times those were, far removed from the hustle and bustle of modern life. Settling back into his seat, the man smiled, reminiscing in his childhood as another chunk of flesh fell from his cheek.
NAIS returns to EATBRAIN with his latest EP entitled Testing Lab. The followup to his raucous 2019 EP “Selecta” on the label, as well as more recent efforts across labels including Bad Taste, Souped Up, and Neuropunk, Testing Lab brings NAIS’ sound back to the hungry ears of the EATBRAIN horde, re-energizing their auditory receptors with the artist’s boisterous neurofunk sound.
