As his work expands and evolves, Dr. Nelson facilitates Afro-Frontier® and Borderland Studies through speaking engagements with an emphasis on intersectionality, and demonstrations of a revolutionary thought set in motion through film and theater. Dr. Nelson prides himself on democratizing the notion of Blackdom and creating spaces for personal growth.

Contemporary Blackdom
Dr. Nelson formed the Ataraxia Project dba Raxia Media Group, which produces short videos on the subjects of Blackdom, New Mexico Black History, Western History, Borderlands History, African American history, African Diaspora; and on occasion, produces short videos for other small businesses.

Blackdom Thesis also teams up with history and theater departments to express the story of Blackdom through collective consciousness, movement and the interpretation of students.

Marissa Roybal’s contribution to the Afro-Frontier® is the ability to activate Dr. Nelson’s vision through her extensive representation, business, relationship building, and organizational skills as well as her own history and passion she brings to the project. Her belief in the values of self-sufficiency, alternative forms of education, and racial justice was forged at a young age and continues to drive Roybal’s contributions.

Through the lens of Dr. Nelson’s Colonization Continuum, Marissa reveals, “The #BlackdomRenaissance includes the telling of the racialization and colonization of my indigenous mixed people in New Mexico, of the area, and the Borderlands which includes Black people during the rural renaissance circa early 1900s.”
