Pokemon NXT - Trainer Theme

Another relatively-sombre piece for a village with old roots.
Not sure where this could fit into the game, I was initially thinking Fuchsia City as it is described as 'an old city that has become new' but there isn't much 'new' in the piece, just plenty of old fogey. 
Perhaps Cinnabar Island? I don't really know the Pokemon world that well so maybe you guys will have a better idea on what would work.

Pokemon NXT - Pokemon Center Ambience

Welcome to Trouser Town, baby!

Trouser Town, of West London, was a vertically confident yet perfectly crooked little suburb. Its high rising buildings stood toweringly silver like upright knights standing to attention. It's inhabitants weren't un-verminlike and they brought to the streets a pungeant smell that hummed the nose. The activity of Trouser Town was a tad more isolated than that the more flashy areas of London, and its folk for the most part were blissfully occupied with their own little worlds. Their only real hassle from the outside was the ongoing rivalry with it's Northern neighbours, those in Bucketon, and the clan-like rivalry of the Grand-Heisting teams in Trouser Town and Bucketon (the Cobalt Camels and the Maroon Mongeese respectively) was a regular spark of petty scuffles in the streets - nothing more than the average buzz of shenanigans and ill-minded theatrics that kept Trouser Town breathing.

The High Rises of Trouser Town

The first track in this series is a soundtrack to the player's owned apartment - where they go after a long day of hunting clues, or maybe it operates as more of an office environment for them. The main timbral repertoire used is here, with a baritone sax leading an accompaniment of double-bass and heavily reverbed piano, filled out by minimal hi-hat percussion and a textural drone for added coldness & dread.

SHADOWS OF DOUBT - ALTERNATIVE SOUNDTRACK MOD PITCH:

I've been putting together an alternative soundtrack for the sandbox-detective game Shadows of Doubt by Cole Powered Games, currently available on Steam Early Access. I absolutely adore this game, and in a year of stellar releases in gaming, I find myself coming back to this more than any other title this year.

My making of this soundtrack is not intended to be any kind of slight against the original soundtrack - Monomoon (Nick Dymond) has done a brilliant job nailing the alternative-80s dystopia, utterly rich with the paranoia of a city on the edge. This work was put together for the interests of wanting to add to my own game music portfolio, using a game that has heavily inspired me.

The intention is to introduce a more kitschy detective flavoring, marrying the hopeless urban isolation with a cigarette-smoking sex appeal. I'm attempting to take influence from darkjazz ambient music to create a more 'depressed' form of the coffee-shop-jazz style.

The hope is that when mod support drops, a mod can be made to read or create boolean gamestate music triggers such as 'in owned apartment = true' to trigger these tracks. Variety will hopefully be found by integrating vertical and horizontal resequencing. This is all entirely conceptual though until mod support does drop, and my experience with coding is minimal. So for now, I'm just leaving these demos here for the curiosity of fellow detectives who are enjoying the Shadows of Doubt experience.

Shadows of Doubt Mod - My Apartment

This track was written to soundtrack the populated internal spaces of the game, such as apartment building hallways, restaurants, and bars. The idea behind this one was that these more populated areas are a slight respite from the general coldness one feels in other areas of the city, and there is more of a glint of optimism surrounding them. The apartment complexes especially lend themselves to a more 'technologically developed' feeling than the brick and mortar of the cold city streets, so I introduced the use of a synth lead to give more modernity to the soundscape. The music is meant to deliver a stronger sense of warmth in these spaces, perhaps some safety to the player.

The city streets in Shadows of Doubt are cold and isolating - it is here we see the true face of a struggling city. Pedestrians curse the freezing weather, trudge from work to home to work again, attempt to warm themselves against the dumpster-fires next to the city's homeless population. The streets paint a grim picture that lies as the backdrop to a population that is always a whisker away from committing unspeakable sins.

Sometimes, when the city's enforcers don't offer up any help, a detective has to bend the rules to get to the truth. Stealth is a pivotal part of the Shadow of Doubt gameplay loop, and breaking trespassing laws is a risk that players constantly have to undertake. This track uses more electronic elements as its musical bed, attempting to denote a change in situation towards a higher sense of danger. The usual swung 6/8 jazz rhythm becomes a straight and pointed 4/4, encouraging a more focused state where you have to keep your wits about you to not get caught (like I embarrassingly do in this video).

Shadows of Doubt Mod - Tresspassing

While a detective can earn his way through investigating adultery, citizen arrests, and other side jobs, it is the homicide cases that are the core gameplay loop of Shadows of Doubt. Murder scenes provide a silent story unfurling before the player as they slowly piece together the identity of the victim, their connections to the world, and the possible motivation of the killer. Being the central part of the player's experience, I borrowed over elements such as the textural drone from the My Apartment track, but here the saxophone uses a more bluesy makeup for its melodies - there is an undeniable underlayer of hot-blooded passion still resonant in the air of the now-still crime scene. The allure of the mystery is irresistible - you will get to the bottom of this, one way or another.
