Professor Sophie Scott (UCL Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience) studies how and why we laugh but also likes to make people laugh. In this podcast her explanation of how we learn to laugh is inter-cut with her performance at a comedy night and a trip with her son to the playground. This research is at the centre of her contribution to the Royal Society's Summer Science Exhibition.

Title: Optimising Performance: Success for our athletes, health for our nation

This event explores how to optimise elite performance in sport and how medical research can translate to both the critically ill and those in high level sport. It will also look at how exercise can maintain health, prevent disease and limit the impact of chronic conditions. 

Chaired by Professors Fares Haddad and Monty Mythen, this panel discussion includes Sir Clive Woodward (Director of Elite Performance, British Olympic Association), Dr Mike Loosemore (Team doctor, Great Britain Olympic boxing) and UCL's Professor Hugh Montgomery and Professor Mike Grocott. 

UCL's Institute of Sport, Exercise and Health has been set up through collaboration between UCL, University College Hospital (UCH), The British Olympic Association and the English Institute of Sport.

Professor Heidi Johansen-Berg (University of Oxford Centre for Functional MRI of the Brain) will be discussing brain plasticity, its importance and its limitations with Professor Semir Zeki (UCL Neuroesthetics) and other academics from UCL.
