This is the soundtrack for a visual album I made in VR titled "Congo Square". These tracks were made by sampling the following jazz musicians: ZAO, Herbie Hancock, Donald Byrd, Mary Lou Williams, Joe Henderson, and Pharoah Sanders. I do not claim to own the rights to these samples, which is why I am making them available for free.

Congo Square

If my last album, Solitude, was a conceptual beat-tape, this album is a thesis statement. 

I recorded, produced, and mixed this album over the past two years as a means of communicating with my ancestors through sound and story. 

The album cover I created for this project is a portrait of my paternal grandparents, Betty and Ernest Paulin; both of whom were active members of Marcus Garvey's UNIA. My grandmother, a lifelong intellectual and book collector, always taught me the importance of knowing my people's history. My grandfather, a noted jazz musician and leader of the Traditional New Orleans jazz sound, represents my love for black music and culture. He was a culture-keeper, a djali who kept the stories of liberated Africans alive through music and ritual. 

This album is a love letter to my grandparents, my aunties, my uncle, and cousins who've made transition. The title is an affirmation that forever lives in my heart because of the love that my ancestors poured into me; a love for African people that I intend to share through my work.

'Shedding' is a collection of original compositions that I've been working on over the past couple of years. 

I'm still a novice when it comes to composition and theory, so many of these 'songs' are more like simple loops, 'feels', or sonic experiments. As I continue to mature musically, I hope to add more layers, variety, and dynamics to my future compositions; but in this present moment, I'm happy with these little earworms. 

I hope you enjoy the vibrations and sounds in this collection.

As a visual artist who grew up during the hip-hop era and the digital age, Jameel’s relationship with Afrofuturism has been shaped by the evolution of digital technology and hip-hop music. Presently, Jameel Amman creates immersive digital soundscapes; using African art and music as the basis for developing virtual worlds.
