We often mistakenly trying to associate ourselves with our thoughts. But our thoughts are waves too. And we can take positive wave, but when it negative you need to let it go through yourself not paying attention to them. You can not blame yourself for the thoughts that arise in our minds. We are bombarded every day by the media and professional marketing. And our thoughts are the result of our culture.

Next time when sad thoughts come to your mind , remember that you are NOT your thoughts, but attention that focused on them.
