Grum’s ‘Deep State’ transmissions resume...
Conspiracy theories have been running wild around the disappearance of Graeme Shepherd a.k.a. Grum’s second (or is that third) artist L.P. ‘Deep State’. Announced late in 2018, the album vanished. While he cannot confirm nor deny some of the more colourful conjecture around the album’s withdrawal, Grum and Anjunabeats are pleased to announce that ‘Deep State’ is back, rewired and reinvigorated for 2019.

Reflecting the unsettling times we live in, ‘Deep State’ has moments of light and dark. It’s a showcase of Grum’s ability to craft pitch-black progressive and immersive vocal pop. The 10-track album is a refined take on the current state of progressive trance.

A throwback to the riff-heavy rave sounds of the 90s, the first broadcast from ‘Deep State’ is ‘Stay’. As heard on Above & Beyond’s Anjunabeats Volume 14 mix compilation, this saturnine warehouse cut was a popular set opener this summer. ‘Stay’ features a haunting vocal from British singer Nathalie Shay, who you can also hear on ‘Afterglow’.

An artist that has defied categorisation over his illustrious career, it’s our pleasure to welcome back Grammy-nominated producer Matt Lange - last heard on our label with a polished rework of Above & Beyond’s ‘1001’ (featured on Anjunabeats Volume 14). 

His instinctive genre-bending electronic music comes to the forefront on ‘Every Word’; a progressive slow-burner that samples some of the more left-field influences on his sound. The track also sees him reunite with Kerry Leva, a voice to many of his previous productions including ‘In And Out Of Phase’, co-produced with a certain individual named Andrew Bayer.

Reflecting Grum’s eclectic set of influences at play throughout ‘Deep State’, ’Tomorrow’ showcases his proven ability to balance ethereal vocals with the darker energies of progressive trance.

"Parallels began as I explored synths, sounds, textures, and melodic motifs from my early days (even childhood) in dance music. I broke out all my old synths both analog and virtual analog, and dove back into classic sound design, wondering why I had put them down in the first place. This reconnection with my past taught me quite a few things, but most importantly: I learned to take things a bit less seriously, and not give a fuck.

I’ve always found it challenging to merge my two passions in electronic music: the dance floor, and the more heady home listening environment. That’s why I specifically decided to challenge myself further and include both sonic landscapes in one track: Parallels. It starts as a 100BPM idm-infused half time hard techno (in my eyes) track, that gradually builds to an electro-slammed full on classic trance revival moment. This is the first time I’ve fused both sonic passions of mine into one whole piece, and I’m very sure this will not be the last!

The EP sweeps across my musical mood board of everything from hyper emotive string sections augmented by modular synth patterns, to more whimsical tuned percussive ear worms. The most exciting part for me was the self discovery of understanding that these two wildly different sides of my musical curiosity can exist in parallel with each other, harmoniously and non conflicted. I proudly present Parallels in its entirety today, and look forward to exploring this concept even further."

Following his return to Anjunabeats last month with ‘Every Word’ (featuring the vocals of faved collaborator Kerry Leva), long-term label contributor Matt Lange brings a new three-tracker to the label, entitled ‘Isn’t It Lovely’.

Bookending the EP around ‘Every Word’ is the piano-led title-track ‘Isn’t It Lovely’ - first heard as the tranquil opener on Above & Beyond’s Anjunabeats Volume 14 compilation released earlier this year. Completing the EP with new composition ‘Push’, a sophisticated dive from the Grammy-nominated producer into his typically dark & progressive palate.

Matt explains his creative process around the EP - “While ‘Isn’t It Lovely’ was of course inspired by my remix of Above & Beyond’s, ’Is It Love?, ‘Push’ and ‘Every Word’ were inspired by sitting down with a piano, Juno 106 and a Moog and simply playing what felt natural. I feel the melodic nature of this EP expresses this just as I intended”.

Debuted at Group Therapy Weekender 2019, Above & Beyond’s new bi-annual camping festival at The Gorge Amphitheatre outside of Seattle, this angel sounds far from heaven sent.

Another example of Above & Beyond’s recent attraction to tougher, tenebrous sounds this year (consider ‘Waltz’, ‘Distorted Truth’, ‘There’s Only You’ and the resurgent tech-trance sounds of Genix on Anjunabeats), ‘Another Angel’ is released worldwide on Friday, November 22.

Warping minds and dancefloors from New York to Prague, accompanied by a titanic visual that’s unnervingly similar to Dr Who’s most terrifying antagonist, ‘Another Angel’ samples the band’s own 2011 single ‘On My Way To Heaven’ from their acclaimed album ‘Group Therapy’.

The unmistakable and usually strident vocal work of Richard Bedford here sounds almost plaintive and cowed, surrounded on all sides by shuddering, cascading bass. Things culminate in a breathtaking drop that somehow manages to be quintessential Above & Beyond and something totally fresh at the same time.

Anjunabeats presents new remixes of ilan Bluestone and Maor Levi’s ‘Hold On’ (feat. Alex Clare), from Kryder & GVN.

Anjunabeats stalwarts (and best friends) ilan Bluestone and Maor Levi have been collaborating since 2011. Together, they’ve released the singles ‘Will We Remain?’, ‘Can You’ and ‘The Distance’, in addition to remixing Armin Van Buuren, Above & Beyond and Gabriel & Dresden.

Their latest collaboration is ‘Hold On’, featuring London-based singer-songwriter Alex Clare. Written on tour in 2018, the track was fine-tuned on the world’s biggest trance stages: Untold Festival, Creamfields and Dreamstate L.A.

Fresh from remixing York’s ‘On The Beach’, Kryder returns to Anjunabeats to rework ‘Hold On’. He’s reworked the likes of Lost Frequencies, Basement Jaxx, Benny Benassi and Chicane, as well as Grum’s ‘Afterglow’.

Irish producer GVN has been turning heads lately with his Anjunabeats debut ‘I Don’t’, which was supported by BBC Radio 1’s Danny Howard, Above & Beyond and Gabriel & Dresden. We’re thrilled to say you’ll be hearing more original material from him on Anjunabeats soon.
